I managed to rip the files to my hdd, but they are .vob files. I can't seem to convert them into .avi. Any help converting them into .avi or any other format recognized by windows media player would be appreciated.

try the software at WWW.vcdgalaxy.com it kicks ass but is a little slow. the main diff between avi and mpeg1 os that mpeg1 will use 2 cdrs per movie but is very easy to convert to vcd where as avi take one more process which takes about 3-4 hours> good luck i think you can even get the software as a combopack if you do a search undersoftware at afterdawn.com!

.AVI IS THE SAME AS MPEG4...DON'T FRET...USE VIRTUAL DUB WITH A PLUGIN CALLED NAN-DUB WHICH I BELIEVE IS NOW STAND ALONE...YOU WILL NEED A COUPLE OTHER PROGGIES TO...VOB2AVI...VFAPTI...VOB2AUDIO...BBC
YOU CAN FIND THEM AND A TUT AT DOOM9.ORG

hey guys.... I have a question.
I have gotten some rather kewl vcd's from overseas and the problem that I have is that the audio track is actually two languages that have been put into the same audio file using the left stereo side for one language and the right stereo side for the other. is there a way to seperate them? how do you do this?
Phoenix.

Wraith> AVI is NOT MPEG-4. AVI is a file structure that doesn't define the encoding method at all, but can contain virtually any encoding method, even MPEG-1.
phoenix2k: Open the DAT files (if you have "good" codec, this shouldn't even require muxing them into real MPEG-1 files) with TMPGEnc and use Demux. You get separate audio and video streams. Open the audio stream into some tool that can handle MPEG-1 audio layer II audio, like CoolEdit, and remove the unwanted audio stream and copy the other audio stream to other channel and save the result. You might require encoding the audio again, if you don't have MPEG-1 audio layer II supporting tool. After you've done this, mux the video and audio together again with TMPGEnc and burn it to VCD.

hmmm, all this hostility, how about DVD2AVI, then load the .vob file and save as .avi, think the name explains what it does anyway.

I have used VOB2AVI which creates an AVI and an AC3 file. Unfortunately the only codec I can get to work is the DIVX codec. This is fine if I'm creating a VCD but I want to go back to DVD. The quality of the DIVX is degraded and when the file is reburned to a DVD I get a stuttering video, almost like watching a slide show rather than a movie. Would prefer to use higher quality codec but have been unable to thus far. When uncompressed or other codecs chosen VOB2AVI will immediatley say it has finihed and will give me an AVI and AC3 file with no data. Any clues?

This thread seems to attract people who don't have really much of a concept of various formats or what they mean.. Ah well...
If you wish to copy DVD to DVD-R, please visit our DVD-R forum and read through the posts, there are guides available and you also get the basic idea how to do this. Forum can be found here:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/forum_view.cfm/35
For people who wish to "convert VOB to AVI" -- you basically mean that you want to encode DVD material to DivX and there are guides available for this process a lot -- one what I can recommend is located at our article page:
http://www.afterdawn.com/articles/archive/dvd2divx_anamorphic.cfm
..and those who want to make VCDs out of DVDs, there's absolutely _NO NEED_ to confuse DivX into this process at all. There's an extremely popular and easy to follow guide how to convert DVDs to VCDs (or readily-ripped VOBs if you prefer) located in here:
http://www.afterdawn.com/articles/archive/dvd2vcd_with_smart_dvd2avi_tmpgenc.cfm
...and now I will close this thread, too much offtopic stuff.
