Hiya budfrog,

It is easy, there are many ways of doing it.

Question is: what is the intended final use of the MPEG2?
DVD
SVCD
etc. etc.

In its basic form, it is this:
rip the VOBs
demux video
demux audio
combine the two into MPEG2 file of the required specification.

Voila! - not that simple really, as I said, depends on what the intended use of the MPEG2 file is.

Are you looking for a "one-click-solution"??

Hiya budfrog,

Hmmm, I am still a tad confused.

You want to copy the Wedding DVD & send a copy to your family? Yes?

if so then there is no need to do any conversion to MPEG2, do a simple copy using your burn software (assuming Wedding DVD is < 4.7 gigs).

MPE files from the camcorder can be run through TMPGEnc (set for DVD-compliant MPEG2).

The resultant MPEG2 files can be run through TMPG Author (a lovely match for TMPGEnc) which will generate a DVD-Compliant structure.

Burn the structure to DVD-R (if you are using Nero to burn DVD's, read as much as you can about it, as it is SO EASY to get a disk that will play on a PC but WILL NOT PLAY on a standalone).

Is that the sorta thing you are trying to do?

I could use some help on this subject. I have authored and burned home movie videos using My-DVD software.

I would now like to re-edit some of the clips. Is there a reasonably easy way to get the VOB files off of the DVD, convert them to MPEG-2 so that I can edit them and re-author the DVD.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hiya BJPrice,

there are a number of ways to get MPEG2 files from VOBs, but it would be best to start with your originals (every translation step introduces some degradation in quality).

Are the originals still available to you?

If not, to minimise degradation, you (we!) will have to do some detective work.

You can re-author the files as VOB / BUP / IFO though , so I'm still not understanding anyone here wanting to convert VOB to MPEG2 (?)

(A single 4Gb VOB file will NOT work btw budfrog )

herbsman,

I think BJPrice wants to edit/cut/otherwise some of the clips that were used in his original project, so I can understand why he asked.

BJPrice,

I only have experience of Sonic My-DVD version 2.3 and version 3.0 (both of which were flakey bits of s/ware, but handy a couple of years ago).

My-DVD writes some ODD results (files being a LOT bigger than expected etc., careful use of a bitrate calculator is advised, as is making a DVD Folder on Hard Drive INSTEAD of burning direct to disk).

herbsman,
Can I edit the clips or use some of them for another project in VOB format? I think I need to convert them and I would love to know how. Thanks

Dr. Chips
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I want to re-edit the clips. In some cases, the orginal clips on tape are gone. That's why I need them off of the DVD.

As for My-DVD software, I was thinking that I can author the dvd to my hard drive, and use DVD2One to compress the project and get more stuff on the DVD. Will this work ?

Hiya,

BJPrice: Yes, you can convert back to MPEG2.

Question: the stuff on DVD you authored with MyDVD, does it have chapter breaks? and do you just want to remove complete chapters? or change the order?

Question: do you just want to change the audio track?

Thing is this, changing back to MPEG2 is an involved process if you want to keep the highest possible quality, (takes lots of time too).

Some more info, please, before I can guide you to the highest quality solution.

drchips,

Thanks again for the reply. Yeah, we have chapter points. I would like to get back an entire chapter to use on a new DVD or to re-edit the chapter.

I don't want to change the audio.

Hope this helps...

BJPrice,

if you just want one or more chapters/cells WITHOUT editing those chapters/cells you can use SmartRipper (I know, before LOADS of people start saying it is already ripped etc. etc. IT CAN BE USED that way, learn to re-use the tools)

if the chapters/cells need editing, I suggest the guide here:

Hope this helps...

I'm intersted in doing the same thing and I can explain why. I want to take a 30min presentaion off of a DVD convert it to an MPG (loss of quility is fine) and burn it to a CD. The original VOB files are around 2GB and are not encrypted. Can the 2 VOB files be combined into 1 MPEG that will be under 800MB in size and can I burn it to a CD and have poeple view it with a standard player (like windows media player) without needing to download codecs? what's the best software out there to accomplish that?

i am trying to go through the same process .vob>mpeg2 in my case i want the highest quality conversion. i record audio video realtime into a philips dvd recorder (because it has an analog to digital video/audio converter), that leaves me with a dvd+r that i then want to edit in vegas. so i want the highest quality conversion (both audio and video). currently i've been using i'mtoodvd to make the conversions, i've messed with the output setting, and am starting to wonder if this software is the right one for me. any help would be appreciated.

I have a question and I can tell exactly how I want to use the converted mpeg2 file. First I ripped a music video from DVD using clone DVD.....made a great looking VOB file but I can not import VOBs into my video eiditing software (premiere pro). I want to use some parts of this music video in a movie i am making, any ideas?

I also require some help in converting VOBs to MPEGs or AVIs. I need to do this to import A/V streams into PowerPoint for presentations, and, as far as I know, PP will not take VOBs (I only want a portion of the file anyway). Is there an easy way to do this? I read Drchips' reply, but I am unfamiliar with the term "demux". Thank you.

I could not get SmartRipper to do that.
I Used PowerProducer from CyberLink and some chapters boundaries are not good...
I am stuck for now.
Welcoming any help.
