Hi I am totally new to dvd burning and yesterday I tried to use dvd shrink to rip terminator 3 to my hard drive.As I am unfamiliar with the utility I managed to do the rip but not very well.I just tried to rip the files as they were,I relise that it is not quite as easy as that.Can anyone tell me which files to remove and how to do it.Also I keep seeing mention of a video folder to send the rip to.Is this already within xp or does it have to be created.I have roxio easy cd dvd creator installed asI am not a nero fan even though the nero software was supplied with my dvd burner.Anyone any comments on this program?

I copied a DVD-9 format DVD and fit it on a 4.3 Gig DVD-R and Played just fine with menues extras and everything.
I Used Smart ripper to decrypt the files and the used Nero recode to make the DVD and It works just find let me know if you need more help on doing it You can also E-mail me at mh249@earthlink.net
1)use Smart Ripper and chose the backup tab on the left,which will decrypt and copy all of the files to Video_Vts on your hard drive.
2) Once smart ripper is done use Nero recode (nero6.0) and select the import DVD option and select the VTS folder on the hard drive Nero will load and recode the files to make them fit on a 4.3 gig cd once Nero is done take the dvd out and play it in your PS2 or Home DVD Player.

Try using the latest version of DVD Shrink. If you have Nero installed it will burn the files dirsctly to disc after backing up. Why do you not use Nero? Make sure you uninstall Roxio before installing Nero. If you want to eliminate certain things like the menu or other extras or subtitles then you must click on 're-author' first in Shrink. I suggest you read the user guide for Shrink from the guides section.

What I do with DVD Shrink (Latest version) is first click on the main movie tree and remove all but 1 English audio track. Sometimes there are several English tracks to choose from. Deciding which one to choose is probably best left to your discretion, depending on what kind of home theater system you have. If you have a good sound system I would probably select ONLY 1 track being the 6 channel audio. If you don't have a system that can take advantage of this audio and don't plan on getting one in the future I would always choose instead the 2 channel audio as it is smaller. By choosing only 1 audio track and a smaller one (2 channel) it frees up more room for the video. Meaning if there is more room for the video steam DVD Shrink won't compress it as much and you will get a better quality image. The Extras are the only tricky part. Not difficult by any means, but can be annoying or time consuming depending on how bad you botch it. Ok, I usually click on the "Extras" tree and tell DVD Shrink to compress it all to still images for the video. Then disable all audio. But there are USUALLY little clips that you probably want. They like putting some intro clips like THX Dolby surround etc that would be really lame to have as still images. These clips are often played just before the menu comes up. Personally I would rather the disc be as normal seeming as possible. So after telling DVD Shrink to compress it all to still pictures and remove all audio I then expand the tree "Extras" and click on each and every node in the tree and watch to see what each is. It can be tedious depending on the disc, but believe me MUCH less tedious than starting over from scratch because you've botched the rip. Best way to do this is to Open the movie with PowerDVD or another DVD Software and examine the way the movie starts. Keep in mind what trailers might play before the menu and what little screens might pop up. Make a note of them and go back into DVD Shrink and enable all the ones that play BEFORE the menu comes up. As for the "Menu" tree, I never touch that. It is compressed somewhat by DVD Shrink, but I never adjust anything or remove anything and I don't recommend doing so.
Once you have made all the changes to the structure you want to, select ?Backup?. I recommend enabling ?Deep Analysis? as well as this will improve the image quality, as it says. Though this does make the rip process take longer. Your call.
This method is purely for aesthetic value. I don't care about Director's audio and such. I just like having the menu's and intro to the movie as it should be, but especially having the Chapter Selections so that I can jump to any point in the movie like you normally would be able to.
And don't use Roxio whatever you do! Nero is much better for this. Preferably a new version of it. The older Nero gave me some troubles.

Very nice villain but there is just one question. Do you ever click on re-author? That way you get rid of everything and can then select the main movie only or whatever extras you want to ADD. What is the point in compressing certain files to stills? You should also delete all subtitle files and all audio soundtracks except either the one left ticked or the one with widest application in your language (e.g. English 5.1 dolby over 2 dolby, etc). There are some good points in your observations but I thought that making a botch rip using Shrink was an impossibility - how wrong it seems.

Many thanks for the info guys,I have studued it with great interest.I had total success with dvd x copy express,two clicks to commence the info gathering from the dvd about 50 mins and then blank disc in click copy 27 mins later perfect copy of complete disk.£70 TO BUY BUT WORTH EVERY PENNY.Many thanks for your response,pc fanatic.

Villain, Discmania:
1) How do you tell which audio to select if you want to keep both 2-channel and one 5.1 surround audio?
2) Is it obvious to tell which file(s) is the main movie? Is it a single file?

After clicking on re-author you will see a list of audio streams at the right/bottom. All tracks are clearly labelled and you just tick the ones you want (the two you mentiom are usually selected by default). The main movie file is always the largest file seen above the audio streams - this needs to be dragged to the re-author screen on the left. Make sure you are using the latest version of DVD Shrink.

Discmania, I haven't had a chance to play with re-authoring options yet. I just don't have much time of late for anything, so I've been doing my rips the same way for awhile. I'll be sure to check that out asap though, thanks ;)
