Can I add .SUB file into an .AVI file?

My DVD player (on my TV) plays .AVI (XVid or DivX) files without any problems. I have noticed that some .AVI files come with an .IDX and a .SUB file for the "subtitles".

My question, is there any way to "connect" these together than when I am watching a movie that the subtitles play automatically?

I usually dump 5-7 different .AVI files onto a DVD and watch it. And I do it by creating a regular "Data DVD" in Nero 7.

Any advise is much appreciated.

These are graphic images and have to be OCR'ed with the likes of 'VOBSub' and it's 'Resync' program.
The first occurence of each letter has to be identified (so it knows it) then it outputs a .srt file.

Also try a program called 'AVIAddXSubs' it's very easy to use.
