Hi, I just installed a Modbo 4.0 chip in my PS2 Slim v15a, in the bottom right of this image: http://www.modsupplier.com/catalog/image...4/gh-051-02.jpg right next to area 3. They system is able to boot when not fully assembled, but if I tighten all the screws, it will not power on (the power light stays red). I assume this is due to some kind of short? Where in particular should I look?

Yotta,
You are shorting the chip to the metal shield. When I install chips onto this perticular board, I position the chip over the middle screw hole. This provides me a flat surface to mount the chip and for shorter wire install. With the chip positioned here, you can use a hammer and pound the metal shield where the metal sticks out flat in order to prevent shorts. Just leave that one screw out when you reassemble.
Try that and see how it goes.

Also,
It doesn't hurt to put a layer of electrical tape over the chip itself covering all solder points. Another short preventative measure.

Honestly at this point I don't think re-positioning the chip is a real option, since I've already got everything soldered down, and I don't have the confidence to re-do it all.
Here's a photo of my board, if it helps:

I don't see where it could be shorting, what with the plastic mask. :/

Look at all of your wires...are any of them being pinched? Look for a crease in the wire insulation.
If nothing else, leave all screws loose. Tighten one at a time until you find the one that makes the PS2 not boot. Then look at that area of the board. Do you see anything now?
If not, and you are still having problems, it is going to be WORTH redoing it. You'll save on headaches if you take your time and do it right. If you have to take a break or two...do it.
Remember, using a little flux can make your connections easier and better.
If you have any more questions....we're all here for you!!!
Good luck!

I was gonna say...that link don't work..but you fixed it....
Could you take a pic with the plastic off? Better to see shorts or other issues that way.
Thanks!

No, they all look fine.

It seems to be around the laser assembly, but I don't see any problems around there. :/

Yeah, I used flux on all connections. I appreciate all the help. I don't have enough extra kynar wire to get the chip mounted anywhere else. I suppose I could get more :/
Thanks for the help so far.

AHHH
I see at least one pinched wire....
If you look at wire on the lower left by the Power and Ground wires...I can see an indent in the wire insulation. That should be your culprit!!

I've now determined from behavior that the reset line is the one with the problem. Gonna work on this some more...
