okay, i have just got my wiikey in the mail, and i am psyched up about soldering it in and trying it out...(i know how to solder it in properly) anyways, i was just pondering on the thought of things that i once read about the wiikey that boggled my mind and i need some explination for please... they go as the following:
1. i remeber reading about updating and games with updates and stuff, but i really dont get what i need to look out for... they say that like updating is bad, but others say you need to update for certain reasons, and stuff like that, i will admit, i am kind of slow when it comes to things like this...

2. i am also baffled by the different programs that i need for the wii such as this brick blocker program, and configuration disks, recovery disks, etc...

anyways, if someone could be kind enough to help me with these problems, that would be great...thank you

lol... ya, i remember you too. but to tell you the truth, it was my dad who really didnt trust the idea of sending my whole unit to you with the money, when he said he could solder it himself and not have some stranger robbing our unit and money... but between you and me, i really wanted you to do it because it would have saved me so much work... you dont know what i had to do to get this small ass peice of shit. since the site i bought it from, only sold to canada(almost all sites only shipped to canada), i had to send it to my dads freinds parents who lived in canada and the freind was ironically visiting his parents on presidents week. so he picked up the chip when it arrived at the friends parents house and brought it back to NY where we live. he dropped it at my house on saturday, but i was in florida so i had to wait until 2 AM last night when i got home to do it... lmao, such a long journey for such a small chip wouldnt you say?

Well with the excpetion of a handful of games, if the backup is from the same region as the wii it will work. No need for anything else to be done, just burn and play. I dont have exact numbers but probably about 90% of gamecube games and 99% of wii games 'just work'

Super mario galazy and smash bros are speical cases. They require the 1.9g update for the wiikey. I'm not sure if wiikeys ship with the newest firmware already installed or not since I installed mine some time ago, but an easy way to check is to try to play SMG. If it works you have 1.9g. If you get the 001 error then you need to update. The handy sticky will talk you through the process of downloading, burning and running the 1.9g update.

As for SSBB theres a bit of a quirk with the chip. Both dual layer and single layer backups run on a wii with a wiikey but the origional disk (so far) still will not. Hopefully a firmware will fix that soon.

The wiikey config disk is somewhat tricky. Some people can just burn and run it but many cannot. In that case you burn both the hacked config disk and the regular config disk. Run the hacked one and, when prompted, eject it and switch to the regular config disk. This will let you switch the region override on or off and change the drive speed to 3x or 6x. (I personally keep it on 3x to prevent excess wear and tear on the drive) Again, the sticky will talk you through how to do this.

Recovery disk you shouldnt have to worry about unless you screw something up. I've never had to use it but it seems fairly simple to use. Burn like a firmware update and run it as per the directions.

Finally, the brickblocker and regionfrii programs. These are programs that you can use on the game isos before burning to prevent the games from installing updates to the wii or to make the wii think that the game is from a region that it is not from. If you only play games from your wii's region then you never need to touch these programs. The only out-of-region game I've played is SSBB and I didnt brickblock it (just let it update and got the extra channels since they dont hurt anything) so I cant say too much else about them.

Remember: updates are perfectly fine when the wii downloads them directly from the internet. Updates in games are only ok if the game is from your wii's home region. Again, SSBB is a speical case there in that the update for it dosent change anything important, it was just something to do with handling dual layer games so it was safe to install on an out of region wii.

I hope this answered most of your questions.

Detailed guides in this thread and, also, all the resources and tips you need for your Wiikey.

PS: Make sure you also 9and especially) read the first post of that thread.
