Curious as to the legalities of installing CFW on PSP's, now that I am a master of modding (thanks, Afterdawn, and all who have helped me get here!)can I advertise in Craigslist, pass out cards, etc? Mods, if this offends, I apologize.

The CFW is legal, but making an open business out of putting CFW on PSPs is probably not a smart thing to do. Often when people think homebrew, they think piracy. That is not always the case, but you can bet the first time someone gets "caught" with the pirated games, your name will come up.

Guarantee it in fact. Just modifying a console so it is capable of playing pirated content is illegal in most countries. Do you really want the hassle and paranoia with n00bs who make mistakes being at your door demanding you fix their mistake.. or else?

I still get people thinking I owe them something 4 years later when a hdd or memory card dies. Not worth it unless you have an address you are prepared to lose quickly if things go tits up.

A modder in New York looks to have been jailed for 4 years for "facilitating piracy" google it.. and there are others..

Now I can't find an example of a psp modder getting that kind of treatment, but there is always a first. the same laws are being broken....
I don't think anything is worth that kind of time.. Imagine getting banged up with real criminals and how hard it will be when they find out you were caught hacking a toy...

Nah.. doing a couple free for friends, or at cost for friends is one thing.. a commercial business?.. not worth the risk.

Good advice, and well taken! And you are SO right, I built a computer for (free!) a friend of my dad's, and I get around 2 calls a month in need of desperate help for whatever trojan or virus they THINK they have lol... I just hate the fact that there are so many PSP's out there that can only play PSP games, I have yet to find one I like...

I love being Canadian eh!! Totally legal to mod. Just can't sell games. Every market in every city here I know has a booth for modding. Hell we even have Advertising. This guys a rip off, but proves the point. Do you actually thinks he gives any credit to the real makers of the firmware. Do you actually think he's ever pressed the Donate button over at Dark Alex's site. I had two kids on the weekend tell me he charged the one kid 40bucks to unbrick his psp to custom firmware and the other 25 to install custom firmware. It's the same process, why different prices. So in a closing thought, remember the makers, they spend alot of time on these programs and it wouldn't hurt to shoot a couple of bucks towards their effort. (UPMS,Dark Alex,And all the homebrew makers.....THANKS)
