I downloaded a movie that has French and English language in the file - the author made French the default language -
Is there any way to change to English?
I can play it on my computer with English (using the VLC player), but want to burn it to disk so I can play on the big picture tube with English language.
The choppers look much better on a big screen.
HELP ! ! !

One method is to use virtualdubmod.
Open the movie, and get into the streams section.
You should see the two audio streams.
Disable the french audio. Set video to "direct stream copy"
File/save avi

I have D/L VirtualDub and followed your directions - however I get a message about an incorrect audio stream encoding on BOTH streams.
I have disabled first #1 audio stream and then #2 audio stream and then saved to a new file.
BOTH times I still get French - NO English at all
Keep in mind the movie plays in French - 2 streams show - top stream is default - bottom stream is English (I guess) - plays French no matter what I do
Comments ?

Try a variation on this method.
Open the file in virtualdubmod. Go to the stream section and disable
both audio streams. (by the way what format are they ?)
Video/direct stream copy
File / save as avi << this will save it without audio at all.
Back to streams, enable them and demux each one separately.
close the video file and open the new one without audio.
Streams/add (add the english audio)
video/direct stream copy
File/save as avi

Do you want to play the file using a Divx player or convert it to DVD?
If you want to remove the extra audio to play the video file in a Divx player, just use Avimux_Gui to remove the audio track that you don't want. Can't get easier than that(if your file is an avi or mkv).
If you convert to DVD, then you should not need to remove the extra audio, you should be able to select the desired one using your DVD remote.

Thanks for all the great help. I started with a mkv file with Japanese and English language options plus subtitles. I wanted to go to English only so as to eventually burn with nero7 to video dvd. With videodubmod I was able to eventually switch the English to the primary language rather then Japanese. Then save as a mkv file again.this gave me a English mkv file. Then I ran it through prism video converter and converted it to an avi file. as of yet i am not even sure if i need to convert from mkv to avi to burn to video dvd.
This is the greatest site ever.

If you want to create a DVD, you do not need to convert to avi first and then to DVD.
If you have a Divx player, then you have to convert to avi and burn a data disc.
