Hi,
I am trying to backup my DVDs to avi files so that I can play them through my media streamer. I have been converting them fine using AOA DVD Ripper and DivX (copying the files to my HDD using DVD decryptor). The only problem with this method is that my output avi files have to be below 2Gb in size otherwise they won't play (tried playing them in Vlan, Media Player and Zoom Player and get the same problem).

I have been looking around the internet and I have found various bits of info on this but I can't seem to get around it.
I read the following: -
The 2Gb limit only applies to FAT drives - but mine is NTFS.
You need to output the files to a openDML avi type - tried that with Xvid and it didn't make any difference.

I'm not sure if I am doing something wrong but I would like my avis to be larger than 2Gb as the quality on some of the longer films is pretty bad.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?
By the way, I have tried a couple of other pieces of software too (I forget their names) but they all caused video/audio sync problems which I don't get with AOA.

I have used 'AutoGK' to convert DVD to 2+ GB.
This was using the DivX codec (separate download) - AutogK defaults to XviD.
I haven't noted a problem with sync.
'VLC' streams OpenDML ok.

1. rip your dvd with dvdfabhddecrypter (free version)
2. shrink your files with dvdshrink3.2 (free) and backup(save) as ISO.
3. finally use fairuse(free version) to convert the ISO's to Divx, if you have problems with Divx, instead use the Xvid codec (it's more compatible with all the players you mention above.)

If dvdshrink gives you "navigation errors" when you try to open the ripped files, run those files through Fixvts (free). If dvdshrink cannot process your ripped files you will probably have problems getting a good AVI.

I've done over 100 conversions using the above procedures and have never gotten an audio/sync problem.

Note fairuse will only process ISO's.
