Hello, I have just figured out how to stream video using orb. My question is this. What is the best format to convert my DVDs to? I have a program that can convert to just about any format: mp4, divx, wmv, etc. I also have a hd widescreen so I want to get the best conversion settings. Ideally I would like to be near DVD quality as I have a large HD on my pc, but I dont know what format the 360 can handle.
As of last year I believe xvid had the best quality after compression, but idk if the 360 can handle that, but I think divx is the next best, both of these also reduce the size by quite a bit. But if your worried about quality so much, why not just play the actual dvd? It is also possible to rip the entire dvd into an .iso, which you could mount and possibly stream to your 360. However i dont' know if this is currently possible but it would be something to look into, because that would be an exact copy (taking up about 4gb's per disk).
I did some searching online and found out that I can actually use DVD shrink with no compression to get the .VOB file for the main movie and then rename it with an .MPG extension to be streamed through my xbox 360. This way its the full quality of the DVD. I am going to try this when I get home. The reason I don't pop in the DVDS is becuase my daughter likes to watch her Disney and Spongebob DVDS around the clock on the weekends and I have to constantly make replacements as the discs lifespan is about 2 weeks. And I never allow dirty scratched movies in my xbox. That is a big NO NO in my house!
