I have about 20 .divx files that I ripped w/ TMPGEng. All is fine when I burn them to CD/DVD, and play in my DivX compatible DVD player. For some reason how ever, my XBOX 360 will not recognize the .divx files when streaming.

I've tried to change the .divx extension to .avi, but that doesn't help. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Ascertain you have the required codecs installed. For directions, follow this guide.

But you shouldn't have to use Tversity with the Fall Xbox update. I've got the same problem as the OP, I can watch a divx file if its saved to a flash drive or DVD, but can't stream it, only .avi files. I think it has to do with that I'm running Win XP Home Ed. instead of Media Ed.

first thing... you have to go on xbox live to download the update. second, dont try to access your divx through media center. under the media tab on the xbox console you will see an option for videos... thats where you'll access it. make sure your computer is sharing folders to your xbox 360.

Beandip40 is correct, this had me stumped for a bit as well,

Basically MS has not updated anything that the Media Center portion of the Xbox will play...

but from the Video section of the Media blade you can play Divx and H264 files without issue.

But isn't the Media blade in the Media Center portion of the Xbox??, so really, MS did update the Media Center portion.
I think the problem the OP and myself are having is this; I put the .divx file in the video folder I am sharing, but when I go to the Media blade and select Videos, I get the message that there are no videos there. Now if I put a .avi file in my folder, the Xbox sees that with no problems. And like I previously posted, I think if you're running XP Home, like am, and not XP Media Edition, you won't be able to stream .divx files, you can only play them from a DVD or portable device.

The Divx and Xvid files have to have the .avi file extention. What program are you using to share the files? Zune software? Windows Media Player? The original Xbox 360 file sharing device? The original X360 sharing software won't stream DVIX XVID or H264s

And no The MEDIA CENTER portion is within the Media Blade, the media blade is not within the MEDIA CENTER. The confusion here is that under the Media Blade it lists the following
Pictures
Music
Videos
Video Store
Media Center (with the green box)

The MEDIA CENTER can only be used with a Media Center Edition of Windows (XP MCE or Vista Ultimate etc) It actually launches an entire new application with the xbox360

I have the xbox360 pro with the latest software installed. I have .avi (that play through sms on the ps2 by the way) & .mp4 movie files on one ext hard drive with FAT32 format. I can see the files on my xbox360 but they will not play. I get a message that says you need to go online and update, but MY CONSOLE IS UPDATED! (I don't have internet access at home but I updated recently using a 2008 demo disc in xbox magazine). What could be the problem?

Most likely the disk does not contain the codecs. These are actual downloads from Xbox live (Free, but MS has to track them for licensing purposes)

I would hook up the xbox to the internet and then attempt to play the file...it will automatically take you to xbox live and attempt to download the correct codec.

I have a similar problem -- I am using Win Media Player (with sharing) and usually streaming the DIVX files works fine (I do rename them to .AVI though).

Every now and then, I get one encoded with odd CODECs or bitrates and the 360 cannot play them. Sometimes I convert them with DIVX encoder (DIVX) or Agogo (MPG) and everything is good.

I have 1 vid though that wouldn't play (wrong CODECs), so I re-encoded it with normal xbox settings and the new file will not appear on the xbox (it's in the folder on the PC, but does not appear on the 360). I tried renaming it, re-encoding as MPG2, etc, moving to other folders, it just will not show up.

Any clues?
