All,

I just bought a very fast system (3 Ghz-HT, 512Mb), including the Plextor PX-708A DVD +/- burner ... specs say it should read DVD-ROMs 5-8x ... using SmartRipper or Nero I only get a read-speed of exactly 2x (2701 Kb/sec) ... and it's not going up.
This DVD-drive is connected as a primary master on the 2nd IDE-channel, nothing more attached to it.
I just connected this drive to the 1st IDE-channel ... no improvements.

In the same system I have a Samsung DVD-ROM (SD-616Q),
which starts at around 1.8 but will increase up to 5-6x!

I flashed the ROM of the drive to the latest version (1.04), I also installed ASPI-drivers from Aapatec
(but SmartRipper says it is not able to amke use of it).

Anyone any ideas?

There is Nothing wrong, this is Normal..My DVD Burner which is a Sony DRU-500A will Only rip DVD"s at 2X speed but it has a read speed of 8X...I have an Lite-ON DVD Rom drive that has a read speed of 16X and I can rip Dual Layered DVD"s at about 7X and Lingle Layered DVD"s at up to 12X...I found a Speed Increase when I installed "Force ASPI" but the DVD Burner only ripps at 2X and you shouldn"t use the DVD Burner to Rip the DVD"s if you have a DVD rom Drive because you don"t want to wear out the Lazer and Motor before it"s Time as I have heard of Poeple Wearing your There Burners in less than 18months because they were useing it to rip and to Copy on the Fly with there Burners...Cheers

What version of ASPI do you have? Do ALL -- ALL FOUR version numbers match up?

I've had this experience...
My initial installation of SR appeared to get 4x or better ripping speed as I remember, 20 minutes 4 a film. A subsequent rebuild of my win98 o/s has left the ripping operating at 1.2x. So in an effort to understand why the same drive, machine and software takes longer now I've been playing. I've found that one of the following 2 changes has allowed for bursts of 4-5x and a steady 1.2x ( 30mins 4 a film ). I've turned off autoinsert notification and enabled dma. Probably worth a go on your machines. Hf

I have the same problem: My AOpen-1640 Pro (Pioneer DVD-105S)can use only 2.1 speed.

Plz. someone tell me where to:

1. Turn OFF Autoinsert?
2. Enable DMA?

under Windows XP Pro?

K well here we go, to turn off auto insert notification u simply right click the drive and on autoplay choose take no action. Though in my opinion this does'nt seem to imply that autoinsert is really turned off, just not acted on.
This article tells u how to change the dma settings
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;310751, not as easy as 98, xp kinda sucks :)
This article should allow u do turn off autoinsert properly, http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;330135&Product=winxp
Pls let me know how u get on and pls be careful making the changes I h8 to think u did this and screwed up your o/s and then it still did'nt work 4 you. And it would all be my fault :)

Thanx for the info guys. I finally went through the pages at here:

http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=6645

It was tough, only the "hardcore" solution helped. I had to download and install VIA IDE Miniport Driver. Now there is a new application called IDETool Version 1.0 on my desktop which provides information about my drives. It says that my AOpen DVD-ROM drives on the Primary Slave Channel is Ultra-DMA mode2 (ATA33), the BTC DVD-RW on the Secondary Master Channel is Ultra-DMA mode4 (ATA66).

Could you guys tell me are these setting correct, cause I don't get the point why one optical drive is faster than the other??!

I'm still stuck with this DMA settings.

As beeing in PIO Mode (just realised later, thank you guys), a few DVD writing process failed due to low speed of my both 2 drives: AOpen 1640Pro-A (Pioneer 105S model) and the BTC DRW1004.

Then I ran the "Nero CD-DVD Speed" application to check my drive's speed. It was x2.29 at AOpen and x4.76 at BTC. This is damned slow. I realised that DMA is not available by default, only PIO Mode is. (That's where I said Windows XP is shit, give back my money.)

I've really tried everything you guys mentioned here - no succes, so I went to VIA site for the last chance. I thought I had to download and install VIA IDE Miniport Driver. Now there is a new application called IDETool Version 1.0 on my desktop, which provides information about my drives. All looks wonderful at the moment. It says that my AOpen DVD-ROM drives on the Primary Slave Channel is Ultra-DMA mode2 (ATA33), the BTC DVD-RW on the Secondary Master Channel is Ultra-DMA mode4 (ATA66).

But Nero is not able to write a bit now. Starts writing, but it stops immediately. Thanx, it seems like the disc is unscratched, so no waste. But I can't write discs. Shit.

OK. I thought I have to turn off IDETool Version 1.0. Checked the Device Manager, but it doesn't look like it was before VIA Miniport install. Now "Advanced Settings" (next to the "General" tab) disappeared from the Primary/Secondary IDE Channel of the Device Manager. ...is this the price of having VIA driver instead of the 4 years old Microsoft one?

I found new versions of Nero 6 (6.3.0.3) on Ahead's site. Downloaded and installed succesfully - old version detected and updated nicely. But since then my computer boots in WindowsXP, and when the logon screen appears, Windows restarts. One boot after an other - without touching the keyboard!!!
Also tried to boot in Safe Mode, but I couldn't - blue screen appeared. After one hour of struggling I could boot with Safe Mode. I uninstalled VIA Miniport driver. Still sucks, can't boot with Windows normally - that was not the reason.

At 3 hours in problem-hunting, I hardly get in with WinXP Pro and deleted InCD v.4157 (part of Nero 6) and now my computer can boot again.

But still can't write DVD-s: Nero Burning freezes as the previous version before. Also freezes with Nero CD-DVD Speed Software. All these were OK until VIA Miniport Driver install - though it's gone already. I didn't check other Nero applications. Everything the same like it was with the 6.3.0.0. version. Shit.
There is another problem with the latest Nero 6 (6.3.0.3), there is a yellow exclamation mark at "Nero Image Server", in System Devices under Device Manager. Strange.
I've also sent this message as an e-mail to AHEAD's company.

Need help! Thanx a lot!
