playing dvd's on Toshiba DR-5 Dvd Recorder

All of sudden, the unit will not recognize a dvd placed in tray. It trys loading for a few seconds, "clicks" and says "no disc". It will recognize and play Cd's ok. I tried a dvd lens cleaning disc, but since it won't recognize/play that disc either, that didn't work. Any suggestions? [Toshiba wants as much for out-of-warranty repair as the unit cost]
