My motor seems to have malfunctioned on my 360. I have done all the research on replacing and know about the flashing, but I also learned this could potentially cause me to banned from live. I called Xbox and asked them they confirmed it could, but I asked if it was possible to replace with an identical model and rom ver unit if that would eliminate the need to flash it. They told me yes if it was the same it would work to just switch and go. I have found several that are identical but what I dont know is would I need to by a used one salvaged from another console so it would be ready or will a new OEM be loaded with the key or not because its never been installed in a console. Thanks for the hepl.

It ABSOLUTELY has to be flashed with the drive key... identical drive or not. There's no way in hell for a replacement drive to have the right key to work in your console (have you seen a drive key? Absolutely no way!).

So if you buy a salvaged drive, it'll have the original 360's key. If you buy a new OEM drive, it'll have a dummy key.

Both of those drives will fire up, and will play dvd movies, but neither will play a 360 title until flashed.

HTH,
Mike

O.K. that all makes sense to me just want to be sure. Another option that seems to be my best bet is to get a new drive and swap the PCB. That should retain firmware and key, correct? Then the board will say I have the same drive?
