I'm in the US, and I'd like to burn/share a substantial number of videos with a friend in the UK. I've been reading through the guides on how to remove Region, etc... but still have some questions about the best way to accomplish this.
The original files are avi. My friend had stand alone DVD player, and only a CD drive on the pc, but we may be addressing that in the near future. I'm using a new demo version of Nero7, but have a full suite for Nero6.
If I burn a data DVD, it won't carry Region protection, correct?
I've used my five Region switches, so if I just tell Nero to burn a DVD that will play in a stand alone player,it *will* be region specific, yes? And won't play on the stand alone DVD player there?
If it is DVD you created it will be without region code. The problem is only PAL and NTSC, but if your friend will watch it on computer only, this has no effect, since it is only TV standard.
However most European stand alone DVD players will play NTSC DVD and convert it to PAL on the go, so you do not have to worry.
Use good DVD brands to burn, since not all standalone will play all.
If you use DVD+R, book type it to DVD-ROM in your burning software.
Some, like ImgBurn (free-donations only) will do it automatically.
Computer drive will play almost anything.
Thanks for taking the time to reply, and for the suggestions/info. The Region difference has been haunting us, but I hope we'll be able to circumvent it now.
I see ImgBurn mentioned a lot around here - its really that good, eh? I think I need to look into it, as my most current Nero is a trial that came with the LightScribe. (I can always go back to the older full NeroSuite)
-R? Not doubting that you're correct, but why? Is it a UK to US thing, or just good basic practice? I think the blanks I last purchased are +R, but that wasn't really choice, just taking what was on the shelf (though I *have* learned to avoid certain brands!) Should I not use them to share?
What I'd like to find is a concise and straightforward guide (and by that I mean dumbed down to my level) to all these formats, and the advantages and disadvantages to each.

I think you will have hard time finding one guide which says it all.
The best is to stay on couple forums and read what people say.
These things are very subjective and hard to point one thing, like everything else in computer business.
Why -R? This format was introduced first and many older players will cope better with it.

As for light scribe. You do not need Nero. You need light scribe drive (which you have) end software for it. Nero is just convenient package, because lots of people use it and it has CD/DVD cover design feature.

Yes ImgBurn is good, especially if you burn double layer DVD.
For single layer DVD, Nero is fine.
If you try to rip commercial DVD, all the software will rip it region free, so really you do not have to worry about it.
Most simple DVD authoring software packages will not even have a feature to insert region flag, that is if you do your own DVD from your video.
