What kind of software player are you using?
If it is Window media player, you can have problems. If you have full version of Nero, use Nero Player to watch DVD.
For me,Power DVD (CyberLink) player is very good but at extra cost.
If you have new DVD player you may have to set a region first, but this will only show if you try to play rented DVD, not your own creation.

ok at the moment ive not got nero on the computer but i dont think that makes a diff because i had the problem even when i used nero
im using vso convertxtodvd to make the dvd files from avi files and then TMPGEnc dvd author V2.0 to create the dvd and burn it
this isnt the problem(i think)
the problem is this after making a dvd my computer wont read the disk
even disks my friends have made for me
games on dvd disks work and cds but thats it
in my computer the cd/dvd sign alway says 0mb free even if the disk is empty but i can write a dvd the put it straight into a stand alone dvd player and it works fine
as for WMP i never use it i use winamp or divx player
if you need anymore info to help me ill be happy to give it
thanks again for your help!!

So we established that there is nothing wrong with your DVD drive, it works.
Now next would be to go on NEC web site, find latest firmware for your drive model and install it.
There is a page on web where they list latest firmware for most brands and models, see this.

It's good that you figured out the problem. That is why I recommended to check firmware version and update if needed.
Be careful with +R disc as those may not play on stand alone.
If that is the case book type it for DVD-ROM, this is done with burning software.
Good luck.
Do not use cheep media.

im not very technical with computers but have been manging to burn dvds successfully with nero 6 after checking out the how to guides.
my major headache started when i needed to free up space on my harddrive, easy peesy i thought just burn the files and delete them and i'll have the discs if i need to reload the files for whatever reason (the files are avi)
after doing the first disc i had the sense to check it before deleting the info from my hd
these discs play fine on a standalone dvd player but the computer showed used space 0 bytes, free space 0 bytes with the disc coloured in as being used??? and trying to play the disc thru my computer > drive D direct i just got a blank window (i have windows media player and power dvd) and just to mess with my head my laptop will play the discs with windows media player
i've spent weeks trawling thru forums looking for the answer, i've checked if i was in PIO mode instead of DMA mode, i've installed a different media player and codex, cleaned the disc drive and checked other things that were suggested that i didn't understand and checking my firmware freaked me out i was about to go to an expert for help when i found scrrfc's post - yeaaaa someone with the same prob as me i'm not alone
i read thru the replies and again freaked at the firmware(defo not one for me to try) then i saw scrrfc had had a brainwave use a DVD+R disc instead of DVD-R
i tried it - it worked and the discs still play on my standalone - brilliant and so simple change the disc!!!!!!!!! after all the hassle and stress i've been thru i can't believe it was a real simple answer like that - i'm now going to bang my head against the wall repeatedly

hi rotary
no i didnt make a thread. from reading lots of forums i see people get annoyed at new threads covering the same old questions. i figured someone must have the same prob as me if i kept looking so i tried suggestions made to people who had similar probs then i came across scrrfc's post and he had exactly the same prob as me. now i'm sorted
