Hmmm, maybe not a bad idea for some of you guys... I know I'm not gonna do it!
Quote:For those of you ?lucky? enough to have purchased an HD DVD player from Circuit City in the last 3 months, the chain is offering a ?do-over? of sorts. In what looks to be a somewhat secretive program (you have to ask for it) the City will take that hidef player off your hands and apply its original purchase price towards a new Blu-ray player. Of course, you?ll be paying the difference, which could easily be a couple hundred if not more.
And before anyone asks, no, this offer does not apply to discs. That?s what eBay is for.
If you?re the type to hold a grudge, the offer also allows you to opt for a straight up gift card, to buy regular DVDs with I suppose.
I?ll give props to Circuit City for offering this type of deal, but remain a tad skeptical as to who it will actually benefit. My logic: if you purchased an HD DVD player in the 90 days prior to Toshiba?s conciliation speech (that?s the grace period for this offer), odds are you didn?t pay much, unless you went high end. Given that the street price on Blu-ray players starts at $400, this ?upgrade? will cost you at least a Franklin or two, plus the titles.
I don't know why anyone would do this, I mean you're not really losing anything. You have very nice SD upconverter and it will also play all the 500+ HD DVD's out there, including imports. I'm going to stick with my player and maybe get one of these new Panasonic DMP-BD50 players when they drop - if they aren't rediculisly priced!
I guess that is a good idea for people who feel cheated by HDDVD.
I personally do not. Also I do not see why Circuit City would
do it. I mean what is the upside for them? Makes me Wonder?
I was one of the unfortunate HD-DVD owners since 11/07. I did purchase my HD-DVD from circuit city but my return time was way over and i already have a good collection. So i decided to try to return it anyways and upgrade. I took it in and talked to the return department and explained to them what i wanted to do. Talked to the manager and walla - Return accepted even after 4 months.
How so? Well i had to spend a bit more money. I simply told them i wanted The LG-BH200Super Blue Combo player with a 5 year protection plan. and i was hooked up - now i can enjoy all the blue-ray and all the cheaper current HD-DVD's. Yay Iam so happy.
Now to hunt down all those sales for HD-DVD on older titles and buy new titles on blue-ray.
So I guess it doesn't hurt to try to return and upgrade. I recommend you guys do the same if your an HD-DVD owner and go for the LG-BH200.
Only downside - you will need to upgrade the firmware for it as soon as you get it. but no biggie.
Best Buy is now offering a $50 gift card for anyone that bought an HD DVD player before Feb. 23. With this offer, you don't even have to get rid of your HD DVD player. You can read about it here.
