Possible to play x264 hd movie files from external hdd onto lcd tv?

I would like to know if there is any way I can play x264 hd movie files from a external hard drive, onto a lcd television? because I have many of these files on an external hdd.

Either going through a hd dvd player or bluray player?, or just connecting to a lcd television?

with some coversion, you can connect the hd to a xbox 360 to a hd tv and that should play those files. You may have to convert the h264 to wmv, though.

thanks for the reply.
A xbox 360 will be in this setup, but I excluded it as a possible hd movie player because I've read that the xbox 360 can not play hd movies without lag and especially from external hdds.
If anybody has any experience with the 360 and hd movie files, please inform me.

I currenly am playing my hi def movie files from an external hd connected to an xbox360. The resolution is something like 1980 x 1080 which looks wonderful on a hd tv. I don't see any lag time whatsoever. The movies play beautifully. The only thing is that you have to format your external hd with macdrive. This software allows files greater than 4gigs to be played on the xbox 360. rather than fat32 which doesn't allow you to play files greater than 4 gigs. Believe me, the 360 is the next best solution than having an actual blueray player especially if you are using an external hd.
