both formats are great quality if you want to booktype use the DVD plus R format although they quite more expensive than the DVD dash R format online. I use the DVD dash R format with great success and buy them online at

http://www.supermediastore.com

other good places are:

http://www.meritline.com

http://www.rima.com

in-store there tricky to fine you have to find Sony or Fujifilm that are MIJ 8x speed which are very hard to come buy nowadays on-line is definitely your best bet

Check those 3 sites mentioned above,as well as newegg.com.

Also look for free shipping. One of those sites may have a slightly higher price, but the free shipping offsets the final price.

Are you looking for any certain ty?
1)Inkjet printable-white/glossy/shiny.Needs an Inkjet printer for labeling.

2)Shiny thermal/shiny lacquer-sometimes you can get these cheaper.Excellent for labeling with a sharpie or thermal printer. Some may even put the dreaded sticker label on them.

3)Reg Ty media.

Majority of taiyo yuden media can only be bought on the net.Buying from the net,the dash format is cheaper than the plus format. We have been wandering why the different prices for years. When on sale media at the store is the same price for either format.

Anywho, dash Tys are cheaper. The plus format can be booktyped to dvd-rom,making for a higher stand alone player compatability. As long as you aren't playing your backups in dozens of drives, the dash format may be ok for you.

It sounds like you haven't tried the dash format:

What I'd do if I haven't used the dash format, is to get a spindle of some Verbatim -8x or -16x.
Test burn a few of them. Then try them out in any drive that is going to be playing those archived backups. PC,Stand alone player/s,and/or Game consoles-friends/family/etc.
I'd hate to get stuck with big batch of dash tys and find out my player/s didn't recognize them.

Verbatim are top notch stuff as well, and features the Advanced Metal AZO dye just like Taiyo Yuden.

Myself, I prefer the plus format because I booktype them. But,the best Inkjet printable media made only comes in dash format-the Ty watershields.

A lot cheaper now than a yr ago!!

A year ago,around a buck each. Now,under 65 cents each-well worth it.

By the time I finish my spindle of 50,they should be under 50 cents each.
