Ok first try loading your SM CD, then insert your SM DVD.
If it still don't work then I would ask your retailer whom you purchased it from for an exchange. Probably a bad disk. Or if you have a friend with PS2, then you will know if its the disk or your PS2.

Did you follow these steps to use Cogswap loader.

1. Eject disc tray normally and put in an "big"/"high TOC" official PS2 game (like GTA)
2. The screen will say PS2 DVD
3. Press "X" on the controller
4. The screen will say "Use Cogswap"
5. Manually eject the disc tray (by slide tool or fliptop method as above)
6. Replace the official PS2 game with your backup DVDR
7. Push the disc tray back in and pull white cog to the left to close (or close fliptop if that's the method you're using)
8. Press "X" on the controller
9. Your backup game will load as normal!

I have tried the method you said, i get up to the use cogswap screen, but the backup never loads. i use pro evo 5 as official dvd, i've tried street fighter and aswell as mortal kombat, kingdom hearts.

as for swap magic dvd, it works in friends ps2, not mine. however all the originals works and so do vf's, it is just backup dvd's and swap magic dvd. is there something wrong with the laser and if so how do i clean it.

My PS2 did not want to load the CD Swap Magic. It loads it sometimes and then other times it doesn't even though the CD is new and perfectly clean. I exchanged it for another ps2 and its been working perfectly.

I don't know what caused the first ps2 to have trouble with it.

Ok the Original Disc you use as the high TOC disc needs to be bigger in size than the backup you are loading.
What version is your PS2? Using the fliptop or slide tool.

I am using the slide tool, and PS 2 version is SCPH-50003, i've been using high TOC Cd's, just tried gran turismo 3, i'm trying to get mortal kombat shaolin monks to work, not even eye toy 3 is working and that has a smaller TOC. i'm going to give my exploit to friend to see if he has the same probs, any other suggestions? basically once using the slide card, the backup dvd just starts spinning, and stays at the cogswap screen.

Ok you have a Version 9 PS2 which can have some problems with it.
http://www.cyber-mag.com/station/laserPS2.htm
Just click at the top of that page on the left hand side for the V9/V10 syndrome.
Another note on V9 is I have heard they like DVD-R discs better.
And you may have to use cdloader instead of cogswap to boot your backups. I am not totally sure what all is compatible anymore with cogswap loader.
