Hello everyone.

This past summer, between the time range of early July to late August 2007, I went on vacation to China and brought my Wii along with me. My friend took me to a shop that did console hardware modifications and with my permission, soldered a chip onto my Wii that allows me to play backup copies of games. Now that I'm back in the states, I have no way of contacting that person so I look to you for help.

My Wii is currently up to date with Version 3.2U

According to the Wii Firmware Updates sticky:

Quote:
Super Mario Galaxy (SMG) contains a new type of copy protection. To play the game with the exception of D2CKey you will need to update your Mod chip firmware to the latest version downloadable from their respective web sites (WiiKey 1.9g, Cyclowiz 3.6, Ect).
Now, I bought a retail legitimate copy of SMG here in the United States, which is also where I purchased my retail Nintendo Wii. However, my Wii was modded a good 2-3 months before SMG came out, and til this day I have not updated the firmware (the guy that modded my Wii updated it with the latest firmware at the time, around mid August) but was still able to play SMG without a firmware update.

Does this imply that I have a D2CKey? Is there any way I can find out which one I have or would you guys be able to identify which one I have if I provided pictures? Thanks for your help.

Regards,
Stan

You can play legit SMG with or without a modchip so that's no indicator. The D2CKey wasn't out when you had your console modded afaik - I expect you have a Wii that is pre-D2C. To ID the chip you might have to open up the Wii and post the pics like you said.

Alternatively you can try different firmware updates for different chips to see if they have any effect. For example - to test for a wiikey, try a backup copy of SMG. It probably won't work. So then try wiikey 1.9g firmware update and if that works and the backup runs, you have a wiikey. This might take a while tho especially if the chip is more obscure :S

Awesome. Not sure if that's good or bad but at least I have all those stickies in this forum to help guide me in the right directin now that I know what I actually have.

So now that you have helped me identify what physical chip I actually have, I definitely want to update my firmware as I'm coming close to a year since it's installation without updating anything. After reading rafadawn's post, I still have some questions and concerns that I hope you can address.

1) I have a bunch of Memorex DVD+Rs at home, a little over 300. The post mentioned that I should use DVD-Rs. Can I get away with burning images onto the DVD+Rs or would I need to purchase a set of DVD-Rs for it to format correctly?

2) Seeing how this will be my first update, I am convinced that using the Wiikey 1.9g padded update files is my best choice as I probably would mess up utilizing filechop. Is it as simple as downloading the respective files, extracting them to my desktop, and burning the ISO image via imgburn onto a DVD and then that's it?

1. I'd use DVD-Rs, preferably Verbatim. There's nothing wrong with trying different disks but you might burn a fair few coasters and then end up going with what's recommended.

2. Pretty much yeah. Follow the instructions and also stick with the other info posted there in case you have problems with disks working - it's all there. Again... media can be critical. Some disks won't work as wiikey firmware/config disks.

If you run into snags then you just ask for help.

DVD+R's are fine. Nearly all my wii and gc games are burned on +R's and I've only had a handful of failed burns.

Well, I had my first failed disc haha, but I still have a lot more so it's ok.

Popped in the burned 1.9 beta fix, the ISO was burned at 2.4x speed via imgburn onto a Memorex DVD+R. Burned once and had it verified at the end to make sure it burned properly; it did.

Ran it in my Wii. Started it up to be greeted by an image of a woman's rear end in lingerie; very nice. Told me to Press A or Reset to do flash test, so I pressed A and it then stopped my drive, started the test, and when it went to 100%, said "Test Failed: Check your connections etc etc". I guess I need to buy Verbatim discs then. Are there any other brands that work well? Maxell maybe?

I'd read so many posts where verbatim seemed to be the most popular which is why I tried them. I dunno if there are other brands that are as good tbh.

You will always get ppl who have good results with other types (I've had good results with cheap RW as well) and it depends on the brand and also the burner as well. Personally, it's not summat I think about cos Verbatim are cheap enough and consistent and I can nip down the road and get hold of them very easily :)

Woo! Alright. Progress update!

Originally, I had said that I burned the 1.9g Wiikey update to a Memorex DVD+R using imgburn at 2.4x speed. Didn't work when I put it in my Wii to update; got a "Test failed" message.

I decided to reburn at 4x speed, thinking it would make a difference....it didn't; still got the "Test Failed" message.

According to rafadawn's post:

WiiKey common Problems

Q: On the initial test once it reaches 100% it says error test failed! check your connections and try again.
1)Poor connection between WiiKey and board, Test connections (multimeter), re solder possibly using long wire method.
2)You may have a clone WiiKey or Something else, Worth having a look inside your Wii if you havn't already.

That scared me a lot because 1) I definitely do not have the skill to do soldering of any sort, nor do I have access to a tri-wing tool to disassemble my system if I wanted to and 2) I thought I was sold a clone Wiikey (hard to tell when you get your wii modded in a shady back alleyway somewhere in mainland china).

What it didn't include in the main thread was that you had to Eject the disc prior to flash testing and then reinsert/remove it before the second actual update for it to work. I found the solution in a link in the main thread (maybe it should be moved to the actual main thread to avoid confusion?). After all was said and done, I heard Homer's voice saying "You're all nuts" which was my signal that I properly updated to the 1.9g fix. YES! So I guess Memorex DVD+/- Rs work as firmware discs. Nice.
