Would I need a game cube game controller to select updates and what not, or could I simply use my wii remote?

Do I need to have my wii connected online to get the my wii updated to the latest USA version 3.1 or will simply having the Mario Galaxy Disc inserted do the trick?

If the Wiikey were installed what would be the first sign of it actually working?

If it reads the iso image of a dv-r and shows up with game cube displayed in one of the boxes would that mean the chip was installed correctly?
