Hello everyone.

I've been having a really hard time trying to update my firmware to the v1.9g beta fix [US], and also having a hard time trying to corrupt my Wiikey using the 1.2b firmware 70% trick (although for that to work properly, I actually have to successfully have v1.9g installed in the first place so I'm not so sure on that..)

After browsing the stickies for a while, a new idea has come to my attention. Here is the relative information you should know.

Retail Purchase of Nintendo Wii - United States
Nintendo Version (at the time the incident occured) - Wii Menu v. 2.2, released April 11th, 2007
Place of Wiikey Purchase - The Republic of China

Anyways, I brought my Wii over to China when on vacation and got the Wiikey soldered onto my system. At the time, I had no real knowledge of the chip, except that it played back-up Wii & GC games. I didn't know about "Region Bricking" and so I purchased many games from the shop that were both NTSC-U and NTSC-J. For example, check out the following pictures:

This is the retail version of Warioware Smooth Moves that I purchased in the US.

This is a backup copy that I bought in China that is the Japanese Version. *Note the NTSC-J label on the disk itself.

Alternatively, here is a backup copy that I bought in China of Super Mario Strikers that is the English US version. *Note the NTSC-U on the disk itself.

So, back with my story. When I got my Wii modded with the Wiikey, I had version 2.2 at the time. To test that the Wiikey worked in my system, the people that modded it ran my retail Warioware in the system and it was fine. Then they ran the backup copy of Super Mario Strikers (NTSC-U) and it had to update before I could play...but afterwards it worked flawlessly. Then, they ran the backup copy of Warioware which is (NTSC-J), and it had to update, but even after that, nothing has went wrong with my Wii. No opera web browser, no settings lockup, nothing. For every game that I purchased, whether it be NTSC-U or NTSC-J, it had to update but then it played fine.

So now my question is...I've read the sticky about Region Blocking, and I definitely have updatd my Wii with several NTSC-J backup copies so far. The thing is...I have not had any side effects at all...I can play the japanese games like any other games, and my Wii has not been acting funny whatsoever. But...I've tried updating to the v1.9g beta [us] firmware...and I hear Homer's voice at the end when I press reset saying "You're all nuts", but I can't seem to corrupt my Wiikey with v1.2b to play the retail version of SSBB. Do you guys have any ideas? If you need more information, please ask, I will do my best to give you what you need. Thanks for your help.

You only get side effects if the update overwrites the console firmware version with the wrong one, and that only happens if the game has a higher firmware. The game update isn't strictly a firmware update only. It may also contain an update specifically for that game.

Eg. If you console has the latest firmware and you put a JAP disk in - it will update the console to play the game but NOT update the firmware version. So you prolly been lucky with all the JAP disks you used :)

This is why ppl are generally advised to update over the net and stay updated that way - so they don't inadvertently brick their Wii.

Well that's good to know cus for the longest time, I didn't know why people kept on using the term brick instead of break, but now i know they are two different things.

The problem now is that I could possibly have a clone Wiikey, as every firmware that is deemed successful by Homer's "You're all nuts" voice doesn't seem to really register. Another thing that I've found is that while using the 1.3 config disk, I would go into settings to turn ON Region Free, and to change my drive speed from 6x back to 3x speed. After I save the settings and reset my console, and go back into config, everything switches back to default...almost like I didn't manipulate to begin with.

So, on the offchance that I do own a clone Wiikey, would soldering a on/off switch still work regardless of what type of modular chip it is?

It doesn't switch back to default - The config doesn't report the settings of the Wii. It just boots up with defaults settings for you to change and save.

So let me see if I completely understand what you're trying to say. After I configure settings to my liking in the config menu, save, and then reset, the settings should take place automatically. When I go back into Config, the display settings I see AREN'T the settings that are actually in effect, it's just the default display that the config disk uses. Basically...the Config disk is used to manipulate settings, but it never acts as a sensor for current settings?
