won't read some discs HLDS GCC-4481B HH 48X32 COMBO

An elderly couple I know has purchased a Dell 360 workstation with this drive in it. The drive seems to read SOME CDs but not all. I have been trying to load some programs on it for them and it won't read a copied CD. The properties show it blank, with either a disc that needs 'initalized' or nothing at all. I have tried these cds in my cd drives (3 different ones) and the files are there and will work.

Any suggestions?

THIS is what I have tried:
I have unistalled the XP driver (XPRO SP2), 3 times
upgraded the firmware for the drive
and of course, tried restoring the OS/computer to an earlier date.

Nothing has changed the behavior of this drive!

Thanks for some help; I am stuck and they are depending on me for help!
