I capture videos from my tv tuner and did some edit using ulead video studio software and store into MPG files. The MPGs plays fine until one day I defrag my HDD. This problem only happens to my MPG video files and not the other format.
I use Media Player Classic, VLC, Quicktime to play these MPG files but they either won't play or they have lost all their software navigation support.
When I use Media Player Classic to play the MPGs, the original content is border in a large black background which was not there before. When I try to use the frame by frame playback, the video just keeps playing even though the software register the frame by frame controls.
I have try to re-encode it and it fix the frame and playback controls. But the screen size shrunk, the screen quality got bad and the file size increase for some files.
Have anyone have this problem? Any idea of how to fix it? or how do I enode to retain the orginal video quality and screen size?

Drop the file in G-Spot to determine if required codecs are installed.

The video file used MPEG-2 codec and already installed.

Have you run CHKDSK /F on the drive to see if any
HD errors are ongoing ?
Then take a look at the event viewer to see what errors have occurred
during the relevant time frame.

If these files played fine at one point, it's possible that codecs got derailed. What out-sourced codecs (ones that didn't come with your PC) do you have installed in your machine. Install/run Codec Tweak Tool v2.2.5 to scan your registry for broken codecs or filters.

I think I only install codecs for DIVX and Quicktime.
I installed Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative Media Player Classic. I think they installed some codecs as well.
I also install VLC.
but the problem occurs after I defrag the system which is way later then all these installations.
So, so far I find out that all my files with MPEG-2 encoding are broken. do you think reinstall MPEG-2 codec will help?

I was going to suggest FFDSHOW, but it looks like you got it!
