Combine the mpg files into one file using a script(this is from an old thread).

1. Start Notepad.
2. Type (don't type the quotes) "copy /b *.mpg FullMovie.mpg"
3. Save the file with a .Bat extension.
Let's say you saved the text file as Joiner.Bat.
4. Now Copy and Paste this Joiner.Bat file in a folder which contains more than one mpg files.
5. (Make sure the files are in order, eg 1.mpg, 2.mpg, 3.mpg) and double click the Joiner.Bat file.
The mpg files will be compiled into one file.

Run 'Any Video Converter', load the mpg file and select AVI as the output profile.

Scroll down for the free version.

Short answer is no.
Conversion to another format implies loss of quality and compression compounds it - however the quality lost may not be perceptible - or at least acceptable - if the conversion is done with care.
Load the file into Auto Gordian Knot, select a custom size of 700MB and let it convert overnight.

I agree the differences exist - but I'm not qualified to explain why the different compression methods produce the results they do - I just accept them.
The forums at Videohelp, have intense discussions about video conversion that are quite helpful.
