Hi all

Happy New year!

I have just bought a DVD +- writer and I have just discovered all is not as easy as it seems. This is my first post on here and I'm hoping you guys can help.

My main aim is to take backups of DVD movies, I have a stock of DVD-RW disks and Nero buring software.

Do I need any encryption software too, if so is there a free download anywhere.

If someone could just point out the steps I need to take I would appreciate it

Cheers

You will need DVD Shrink , (links and instructions on site ) You don't need DVD-RW , DVD-R will do unless you want to re-burn. Good media is essential ( 100% sucsess rate with Ritek G04 ) . Compress with Shrink burn with Nero , job done !

Read the guides (tab at the top)

One point to note is that the media you use are very important.

Cheap -RW may not work at all on a standalone or at best may give you a movie that freezes and skips (especially near the end)

get some decent media Ritek G04 are a good balance between price and quality

Hi All

Success!! Well almost the DVD plays on my PC and laptop but not on my standalone. The media used is Packard Bell DVD-RW 1x Speed. I'm sure this is the reason for the standalone failure. What do you think?

Also where can I buy good quality media on the web at a good price?

I presume your in the UK, via the Dixons purchase.....

I use the following: http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk .

They are based in Paignton (Cornwall).....

Good quality media here.......go for the GO4 ritek dye based dvd's.....Traxdata are a solid disc.....

Your issue may well be down to the rw disc OR possibly Nero being a bitch....

What version have you got, was it bundled with the rewriter, cos it may just be the OLD version 5.....

...............PIO is no go, DMA all the way...............
Beware of the Pixies - they move in over night and turn your life upside down

Thanks Again everyone I would have been in the wilderness without this forum for help!!

My DVD player is an old MBO 916, I have tested it on my dad's and it works fine so I'm 100% sure it is to do with DVD-RW media. I found a website (link from this forum) www.dvdrhelp.com and it has feedback on all makes of DVD players and the media which can be used. Mine wasn't listed but a similar model highlighted that -RW would be a problem.
