TMPGEnc + Virtual Dub won't open avi files?!?!

I am trying to convert .avi files to DVD using the guide on the site. I have the defiler codec pack and ffd show. TMPGplus and virtual dub will only open X-Men 2 avi which, using AviCodec, is MPEG 1 VCD video and MPEG 1 audio. All my other .avi movies are XVID or DIVX. This must be a codec problem as they just won't open. Any ideas??

Also the X-Men 2 .aviis split in 2 but in virtual dub the option to append the file is not able to be selected from the file menu??!! Any ideas?
