Clarifications on Softmodding the xbox 360

I have a question about soft modding the xbox 360 but need to clarify something. From what I read we are changing the firmware of the dvd-rom drive, correct? What if we remove the hacked dvd-rom drive and put it in a new 360 would that one be able to play burned games now?
