I don't understand why they make P2P programs when all they do is make your speed slower by people uploading from you.The FTP sites make it where you get the file with no upload.I am still not getting why they keep coming out with these programs it doesn't seem like they are advancing but actually getting slower in my oppinion, could anybody tell me why they do it?it's not making any sense to me at all.

Because people want easy, simple, click, fast. None of this login/password stuff hehe. I agree FTPs rock but i would hazard a guess it might be beyond the learning curve of something say, like the dreaded Kazza.

Most of my friends who use p2p programs haven't even heard of FTP or the IRC. I keep trying to convince them to use one of the two instead but they don't listen or understand ;)

I agree with the last post - I am one of those that like the quick and easy of the P2P programs. But I would like to learn about Bit torrents and FTP's but I dont understand how to do it, with forwarding of the ports and such - I setup a wireless network with a wireless router and adapter cards but it all plug and play so I dont understand what goes on to make it work - Therin lies my dilemma - Could someone direct me? Thanks. << no emails please -Praetor >>

wtf? bittorrent is a p2p ... you click on the torrent file and download ... uploading at the same time.

people don't want to put up with ftp if they have lil to no experience with it. IRC was too crazy for me cuz i would never get my loads ... waiting in line for a day and it resets or never being able to get in line because of the queues. FTP have limits and sometimes you have to upload before getting anything.

but kazaa sucks bad ... unbelieveably slow and inefficient.

What else could they do though?

1. No emails please, spambots fly in and out of here day in anday out and blah blah blah
2. FTP, file transfer protocol. FTP is like HTTP (hypertext transfer protocol) but the most notable differences are:
- It runs through (by default), port 21 rather than port 80
- There is the inheirent ability to resume downloads
- The transfers are direct from server to client (i.e., no download servers and stuffos)
- The server has the ability to create limit access to files, create a credit system (i.e.., you upload one file, you get to download one file), have passwords and loggings as well as limit bandwidth and and a whole bunch of other crap like that

I was gonna write something about BT but then I got lazy.......

BT is bit torrent.

Bit torrent uses a program that you can download almost anywhere called Bittorrent. After you dl the program, you find sites that have torrent files. These files gather the information from others who have it and piece the files together. You need seeds to complete the downloads, a user who has the complete file. Usually there are few seeds and multiple leechers. To become a seed you just leave the torrent window open after it finishes downloading, so you will basically be uploading to everyone else.It works the same way kazaa works, i think. Sometimes it is fast, sometimes it is slow.

IRC is DIfferent. You can dl something like mIRC where you go into channels and look for places that have downloads. You type in triggers, usually phrases that the server sets up mostly with a (!) in front of it. It allows you to go into a DC room where you can look into the directories and download whatever file they have. You use commands such as dir/ cd / cd.. and Get to get the file. Most of the time there are long queues where you have to wait in line before you get to download. You might have to configure the settings if you use certain cable companies or router with firewalls.

I believe in peer guardian. I know this from personal experience. While you can not be 100% effective in blocking spybots and other folks out there looking to turn in your name it does indeed help.

Most of the searches come through port scans. Unless you have some method of detecting them you will never know you have been looked at. These searches come in waves. Sometimes no activity for days then the next thing you know you might have 7 hits a second.

Using a home network has also taught me that these things don't hit every computer in your connection at the same time and you might be recieving hits from one searcher on one computer and another searcher on another computer within the same ip.

Firewalls and ip blockers such as peer guardian do help. Normally version 199.7b runs abou 40% of my cpu usage. That is quite a demand on the cpu but one I deem worth it.

I have been using torrent search to find torrents and its pretty good with whats available, however for some reason I cant get dl speed higher than 4 kb. I use netlimiter but it doesnt seem to help. Is there any other programs around that work better and faster?

FTP sites are out there if you know where to look for them.. Public ftp sites ie oth.net and those other lame ratio based ftp search engine sites will pull up ftp's for you.. But be forewarned : the RIAA/MPAA/FBI also have been known to be watching those public ftps.. so your running just as much risk as being busted as you would be using kazaa or any other P2P..

Private ftps are harder to come by.. access to them isnt just given away. Yea that fact is cold harash truth but hey the owner of that ftp doesnt wanna goto jail/be fined just like you dont.. access to their server has to be earned.
