Also don't forget that some people, like myself, just prefer a particular brand over another. Given a good enough deal, I would definitely make the switch to i5. But I like the OCing and tweaking better on the AMDs than on the Intels and I have been a long time AMD user.
As far as value goes I think AMD has it wrapped up. Loads of noteworthy mid-range chips, my favorites being the Phenom II X3 720 BE and the Athlon II X4 630. But I can't argue that Intel i5 is the top dog right now for the high end.
AMD Phenom II X6 1100T 4GHz(20 x 200) 1.5v 3000NB 2000HT, Corsair Hydro H110 w/ 4 x 140mm 1500RPM fans Push/Pull, Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5, 8GB(2 x 4GB) G.Skill RipJaws DDR3-1600 @ 1600MHz CL9 1.55v, Gigabyte GTX760 OC 4GB(1170/1700), Corsair 750HX

Estuansis,
Here's Besy Buy's lowest prices on Quad cores. There are 5 below the "Magic Number" $699. All are AMD! Out of the 7, 6 are AMD. I'm pretty sure Best Buy has researched this market to death, and have responded to what people have been asking for! Mainly sub $699 Quad cores
Contrast that with the lowest price Core i5 they sell!
People looking for a Quad Core for under $700, won't be ponying up an additional $249.99, to be buying them! I would guess that Best Buy plans to sell a lot of Sub $699 computers this Holiday Season! I think they have every chance of success!
Happy Holidays,
Russ

Jeff: As far as value is concerned, AMD have the lower end of the market (and granted, where most of the sales are) sewn up. However, the i5 keeps continuously being brought into the discussion (not often by myself) for a ritual bashing just because it costs more than CPUs that are far inferior to it for performance. It's clear that both you and Russ are AMD fans and that's fine, but not a word can be said about AMD's chips seemingly without flogging the i5 for being "too expensive" even though it's every bit as good value, just higher in price because it's so much higher in performance.

Sam,
You were the one that brought the i5 into the discussion in the first place. We weren't discussing i5s, we were discussing AMDs. This is the AMD Building thread. You were the one that brought up the $390 price tag, not me. Everyone here knows that the Core i5 is the better system! Just because we are AMD fans doesn't mean we are stupid! It means that we aren't interested in Intel, we are interested in discussing AMDs. Something you sidetrack every time you come here! You sound like a God damn Intel salesman!

Actually, an otherwise-AMD discussion was brought into an i5 discussion by yourself at least once, I'm pretty sure several times, but I won't comb through dozens of pages to find proof. If it's the AMD building thread, surely the same old copy+paste of "people can't afford i5s" is no more relevant than discussing its merits.

It's merits are that it's in an entirely different segment of computing, where AMD does not compete and most of us don't have the money to afford at the moment, which makes all the testimonials about affordability pretty worthless to those that can't! Once more I have to correct your quote, because you again left a few words out of my statement, so you copied and Pasted wrong! I said that Most people in the US can't afford i5. I stand by that statement!
Just last night a Doctor friend of mine (my Dentist for the last 9 years) called me to ask me some questions about the Athlon II x4 620. I asked him why he just didn't buy a Core i5, instead? He said that he didn't want to spend any more than he had too. His Receivables are sky high, because no one is paying, and he has no idea when all of this will end, so he's keeping money very tight. He in turn is paying his bills and salaries from the little he collects and his own personal Bank account. He needs the computer to replace an old one that expired, and the 630 will do the job he needs it to do for a minimal amount of cost, and be much faster than it's predecessor. I'm going to put it together for him by the end of the week! And yes, I convinced him to go with the 630! This will be a completely new build as everything in the old computer is old tech, even the case! Here's a man that makes over a million dollars a year, that's being frugal with his money! He put his household on a budget and his kids on an allowance for the first time in their lives. He's told them all that they better get used to it for a good while to come! To me, that's food for thought!

In much the same way that there are millionaires who don't even own PCs since they have no use for them. For the individual, choosing the X4 makes absolute sence, but as a case study it means very little...

Not to offend anyone or dredge up already buried stuff, but sometimes the question "Does it really matter?" begs asking. To be clear I am not speaking about anything (or anyone) in particular, it's just something I do nearly every time before I post and think it may be a good idea for others to do the same more often. It seems that an increasing number of arguments are cropping up on the forums and some, if not a lot, of them could have been avoided if some one just ignored the harmless irrelevant/opinion/etc. post.
A few months ago an [ex-]AD member was suspended because they posted a mostly irrelevant (and negative if I remember correctly) comment to a news item and another member just had to go out of their way and post another equally useless and irrelevant comment degrading the aforementioned ex-AD member. Obviously things ended up getting out of hand and several posts later a mod suspended the poster of the comment that elicited the first "member attacking" response and locked the thread. All of which could have been avoided had that one person ignored the useless comment just every one else (most likely) would have.
Things can go a lot smoother if one takes the time to consider whether a response is really needed and that will ignoring something you disagree with really hurt/affect anything. I realize there is an extremely fine line that needs to be walked (which I might have just crossed with this post lol) but it's something to keep in mind.

Sam,
I went back and dug out where all this discussion came from? It started October 25 at 16:51, with my post!
Quote: For all the ballyhoo over the i5, I decided to look into real costs, using components comparable to what I have now!
This would be the components and my cost to switch over to an i5!
http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/8679/i5musts.jpg
This is using a Comparable motherboard to what I have now, an 15 750 and DDR3 memory comparable to what I have now.
Total cost is $541.22
This is what the same upgrade would be to do the same thing with an AMD Phenom II 940 and the same caliber motherboard.
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/9836/phenomiimusts.jpg
Total Cost is $310.50
I don't have to buy the memory as most of us have 4GB of DDR2 memory on hand.
Is the $230.72 difference worth the investment? Not to me it isn't! Since I already have the motherboard it would only cost me a total of $182.93 to do the job! For me, the difference in cost would be a whopping $358.29
Just to put all the hoopla in it's proper perspective! I'm getting the Athlon IIx4 630, which will give me about 95% of the performance of the Phenom II 940 for only $133.14!
You do the math!
Russ
This wasn't even directed at anyone in particular, but just a cometary on all the ballyhoo about i5 on the net over the last few months. I think I also made it perfectly clear that I would like an i5, but can't justify the cost at the moment. If I was a big time gamer, I would probably just wait until I could afford it!
It should have ended the same day with this post at 22:44
Quote: Sam,
Well, we are both wrong! It's 90%, not 85 or 95. Typo on my part. It's funny you should say that about the motherboard though. Most of the difference is because of the platform itself. It has features that only work on select CPUs. It has both SLI and Crossfire, while I only have CrossFire. I could buy a motherboard costing the same as the Intel, and still wouldn't have those features. I spoke to Gigabyte on Friday and asked which i5 platform motherboard comes closest to what I have now, and the one I listed comes the closest for those reasons, according to them. Things like the XMP Memory Profile are questionable. EPP does the very same thing, by adjusting the memory settings on the fly to meet the demand. I've repeatedly said that I can't get the same performance adjusting the memory manually. It's worth a couple of thousand MIPS! While it might make more sense to someone if this was a new build, it wouldn't for me. Most of us have 4GB of DDR2 hanging around, so why not use it. That means someone can do a Phenom II 940 build on a very good motherboard for $230 less. If someone needed to buy the memory, it would still be a $100+ price difference. I think you are selling the Phenom II 940 just a little bit short, at least judging by the ones on the forum. The P55 platform is just more money than I want to pay. I can't justify the cost, by the performance difference.
I fully realize that there is no real way to compare both platforms because of the differences in the architecture, but I'm not alone in my thinking either when I say that the AMDs are a better buy for the dollar unless High end gaming performance is your main thing. Even then, it's not 75-80% but more like 85%. I just can't justify the extra expense, especially since I already have 4GB of DDR2 memory on hand!
Best Regards,
Russ
I don't believe anything else needed to be asked or answered, after this post! I wasn't talking about anybody but myself, and the fact that I couldn't afford it. Speaking for myself, I think I was very clear as to how I would do things for my own build, and why. Nothing more was required! Oh, and it isn't dozens of pages, it's perhaps 4 depending on your resolution!

Maw: I agree, but I won't stand being lied about. I would like nothing more than to move on from this particular discussion, but I'm not just conceding with it ending with me looking like the cause of it all, as some douche that pops up in threads to cause trouble.
Russ: I'm glad you'll admit that much. You started a discussion about the i5, in the AMD building thread. I'm not going to pick up on that, but it's probably something I'd get picked on for if I did it.
Now that's a damn impressive PC deal if ever I saw one. Granted, the PC isn't worth $500 by itself, but with the monitor and printer included it's certainly worth a substantial amount more. Just a shame the monitor's 1600x900, what a ghastly resolution... :S Meh, for a $500 PC, I doubt the owner would care very much :P

Why, is that the resolution you use? I don't mean any offense, I just think that it would be more sensible for monitor manufacturers to stick with 1440x900 or 1680x1050 at that size. 1600x900 is an iffy resolution to work with.

I tell you what, this is interesting to see, AMD finally getting off their backs for some aggressive marketing. Been waiting a long time to see them go at it like this. Should hopefully work for them like it has for intel and nvidia in the past:
Refreshing the page brought me two copies of the 'Become her friend' advert and one for eyefinity... Refreshed again and all four ads including the titlebar were 'Become her friend'....

I actually have about 4 different posters of her. One with my X1800XT, one with my trusty old X850XT, and one each with my 4870s. Suffice to say she's not only my friend, she's my mistress XD
