2.17 update and FFXI on PS3.

I saw on a site, cant remember what one, but it translated the japanese changelog for the 2.17 firmware, and it basically said about online stability improvement and it also said about some PS2 games can be installed onto the PS3 HDD, probably partially. It said two games it could do this with was Nobunagas Ambition and Final Fantasy XI. Has anyone else heard of this?
If this was true does this mean I could install the PS2 FFXI on the PS3 and play it online like you could on the ps2 with the ps2 network adapter? Also I know that with FFXI for the PC you have to pay monthly, would I still have to pay each month to play this PS2 version on the PS3?

You could have done this before by downloading ps2 system data from the PS store. I think that this patch applies to ps2 games that may be downloaded from the ps store in the future. BTW FF11 is a paid service but it's online is multi-platform meaning that xbox, pc, and ps2 versions from all regions play together. Call me cheap but I didn't like paying an extra $12 a month to play one game.

Thanks, youve been a great help. I was just curious really. I know what you mean, you shouldnt have to pay monthly just to play a game, you should own that game for life after a one time payment. I thought maybe it might be free doing it like this but oh well, at least ive got FFXIII to look forward to, although Im not keen on the star wars type road its turning to, Ill still buy it.
