I'm having trouble booting my backups using Swap Magic 3.6 w/ Slide Tool.
The backup disk worked the first time I tried it but hasn't worked ever since. The PS2 always takes me to the red screen saying "Please insert a Playstation or Playstation 2 format disc." I don't think the backup disc is the problem (I use a TDK DVD-R which I've heard is pretty reliable) considering that it worked the first time I tried. I'm thinking it might be the laser (although my PS2 works perfectly with normal PS2 disks). I don't have too much knowledge on this subject, so I need help regarding what the problem might be.
Also, I've heard a lot about the unreliability of the Swap Magic + Slide Tool combination and am considering to switch to a modchip, but I'm afraid that the disks won't work even after I install a modchip. I need suggestions regarding that as well.

I got two questions:
-What backup are we dealing with (game)?
-What is the burn speed you are using?

The game is Guitar Hero 2.
I've tried burning one using Nero at 2x speed and another using Imgburn at 4x speed. I'm having problems with both.

Hmmm, are you trying to boot a custom version of guitar hero 2? Like custom songs

Nope, it's a backup copy of the original game. I've tried burning a custom Guitar Hero 2 before, but that ended up only working about 2 or 3 times before never working again.

Well if you don't mind opening your PS2, my next suggestion would be a cleaning of the laser lens. Using a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol you can get the laser nice and clean.

I'm thinking your PS2 may be having trouble reading the game on TDK media. TDK isn't very good media for the PS2 (mediocre I would say), try burning on Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, or Sony's. You do have the DVD-R down though, many people have trouble with DVD+R.

I tried cleaning my laser as well as switching to Verbatim DVD-R disks, but I'm still having the same problem (once again, the disk worked once but haven't worked since). Also I noticed that the few times the disks do work, it will boot right away after I select "load program" on the swap magic screen, but the many times that it doesn't work, it switches to the PS2's "reading disc" screen before switching to the error screen, if this could help in any way to figure out the problem.
I'd appreciate any advice that could clue me in on what the problem is. All I'm trying to figure out here is whether or not my PS2 is in good enough shape to install a modchip on. I don't want to spend $60 on a modchip and the time to install it only to find out that the same problem is still there. Thanks.

Your PS2 boots to the main screen and you can use the browser correct?
If this is the case, since you have an original PS2, you would be in your best interest to go with HD Loader.

All you will need is a HD and a network adapter. The rest can be obtained freely on the web. If you install a modchip that has support for DEV1/DEV2 you won't even need the laser anymore. That's the setup I have in my V9 PS2 (chipped with Duo 3 Ultra).
