I wonder if anyone can help. I have been using various versions of Nero for some years and this is the 1st time I've had this problem. I convert XVID files to DVD using Nero Vision. The results play fine on the PC but when played on my Sony DVD Player and Philips LCD TV the movies have what is called the comb effect on the edges of objects especially when there is rapid movement. Earlier versions of Nero did not do this and produced excellent results. I think this may be related to interlacing or deinterlacing but I am unsure how or what to do to fix it. Any help greatly appreciated.

Just to be clear, your DVD player is set for a progressive TV eg 480p not 480i ?

Yes it is currently set on Progressive. I have tried both settings with exactly the same results. DVDs created on earlier versions of Nero Vision play fine at both settings

I have tried nine different files from different sources all with the same results. Files play fine on the PC in both XVid and DVD format. Also play fine in XVid format on the Sony DVD player and Philips TV, which kinda points to me that something is happening in the conversion process. Thanks for your help by the way.

Sorry i didn't answer the question re whether the original files were interlaced or not. I don't know. how do i find out? I have tried GSpot but it doesn't say. Also I have tried DVD's created on earlier versions of Nero on the DVD Player LCD combination and they play fine. Also If I convert the XVid files with WINAvi the resulting DVDs play fine too. (quality is not as good as Nero though so I would prefer to use Nero). Just as a note I use Nero set at default settings.

This is an interlaced video captured from a TV card.
This is what you would see on the monitor if the source is interlaced.
AFAIK, the DVD player removes interlacing (from an mpeg) when output to a progressive screen (LCD).

OK. Original XVid files do not appear like that when played on PC or when played on the DVD and LCD TV combination (Sony DVD player plays DVIX/XVid files). They do appear like that when converted to DVD (VOB) and played on the DVD Player LCD TV combination but the DVD files play fine on the PC.

I'm at a loss. All I can suggest is to let a friend with a similar setup play the DVD and see what happens.

Thanks for you help. I have removed Nero 8 and installed Nero 7. Guess what? It all works fine now which has convinced me it was a Nero 8 issue and not my PC or DVD/TV combo that was causing the issue. So much for "buying" software.
