Hi, I have a fair idea on how to setup everything but I need confirmation.
I just bought a HDTV (with inbuilt digital tv tuner) and a DVD Receiver which has 5.1 speakers/sound.
I would like sound via these 5.1 speakers while watching free-to-air digital TV (Antenna) and also two digital satellite receivers (satellite TV), instead of using the TV speakers.
Both satellite boxes are connected to the tv with the yellow, red and white connecters which I think are called RCA Plugs. Im pretty sure the satellite is of digital signal, but since its connected with RCA plugs it's not outputing digital sound only analog.
At the moment only when I watch a dvd the 5.1 speakers are used (obviously as the receiver plays dvds and the speakers are connected directly to the receiver).
While watching normal digital TV and satellite TV the sound comes out of the tv speakers.
By using a digital optical connection from my TV to the receiver that should produce sound when im watching normal digital TV. But what I'm concern with is, with this connection will I be able to have sound from the external speakers when I turn on AV1/AV2 that have both my Satellite connections that are connected by RCA Plugs.
Neither satellite box has a digital optical output (im not to sure if its because i have a cheaper box or not but anyhows), so if I connect my TV digital output to the receiver input with optical connection will i still be able to have sound for the satellite TV on AV1/AV2, even though its analog, through my external speakers or will it only produce sound for the TV speakers? (I dont mind if its 2.1 and analog sound). It would be a nuisance as im told you have to turn off your TV speakers when you connect external speakers so you dont get an echo and then have to turn them back on for my satellite TV.
My receiver has 1 optical in connection (for normal digital tv I guess in my case) and 1 set of red/white connections which I can connect sound for 1 satellite box but that means I have the other box without sound. So that's why I'm asking if both satellite boxes are connected normally to the TV and the TV is connected by optical to the reciver will the external speakers produce sound for both satellites on av1/av2?
Also another question is about HDMI? If I connected it from the TV to the receiver what will it do? Does it just improve the picture and sound quality when watching a DVD? I dont have an external digital settop box as mine is inbuilt in my TV so do I miss out on improving the picture and sound quality of digital FTA TV? Or can I watch FTA digital tv if I press HDMI on the TV and then HDMI on my receiver?
Sorry if it's hard or confusing to read what I said, I'm only young haha
Thank you for any help

What's going on man, let's see if we can figure this out.

Normally, I would suggest using the digital out on the satellite box to the digital in on the receiver. Can you not do this?

As soon as you switch the inputs on the receiver, you are going to hear whatever is plugged into those inputs. If you have the toslink cables coming from your tv and going to the receiver, it will probably get assigned the AUX input. When you say that you have both the satellite connections on the receiver, do you mean your using audio and video(red/white/yellow)?

If your cable box doesn't have HDMI, don't bother with this. You want to take your digital signal and send it from the satellite receiver to your 5.1 receiver. HDMI will give you a digital audio/video signal in one. It will allow you to hear Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, DolbyTrueHD, DTS, DTS-ED, and DTS-HD. And also carry all your HD video signals. You should talk to the satellite company about upgrading to a new box. All the newer ones should have HDMI and digital out on their boxes.

For free-to-air TV I dont have an external setop box as my is inbuilt like most new HDTVs. So, Antenna-wall socket-antenna cable-TV. I have no external box to connect digital out and then straight to the reciever. So im pretty sure TV to receiver is just find for external speakers for digital FTA TV.
Both of my satellite boxes, which pick up free-to-air international channels on a big satellite and the other pay-tv on a smaller satellite, neither have digital out or hdmi connections, this doesnt really bother me. The two satellite boxes are connected to the TV with yellow, red, white.
My receiver has only 1 optical, 1 hdmi and 1 red/white connections. I can use the optical to the TV, hdmi to the tv and red/white to one satellite box but that then leaves me with one satellite box with no sound.
That's why im wondering if I have both satellite boxes connected normally to the TV and the TV connected to the receiver by digital optical out will that produce sound for the satellites aswell or will the sound only come from the TV speakers.

No, that should give you sound from the satellite boxes out to the speakers. As long as the tv is outputting the audio to your receiver, that should work.
I read your post this morning and my eyes kinda wrapped around my head. It all jumbled together - LOL!
Look for those cheaper cables, don't buy the expensive ones. If you can't find any in your town, check Monoprice.com. They will have some good deals.

The optical output on the tv, is for 5.1 sound when using the built-in tuner, with over the air HD channels. It will not send 5.1 sound out from satellite, that way. If you hookup an outside antenna, and get HD channels that way, you should be able to get 5.1 sound from them, when they broadcast that way. In a home theater setup, the tv is used only for video, so the tv's speakers should be off.
You normally need to assign the optical input on the surround receiver, to whatever you plug into it. Since the dvd player is built-in with the receiver, the factory set it to play in 5.1 surround, without making any special settings.
To get 5.1 surround from your satellite receivers, they must have a digital output for audio (optical or digital coax). If red & white analog outputs is all you have, the best you'll get is Dolby Pro Logic (simulated surround), and the red & white cables must connect to the surround receiver........not the tv. Even when the satellite receiver has a digital audio output, the only channels that broadcast in surround are HD channels, premium movie channels (some HBO, Starz, etc.), and some PPV channels. If you don't have or use any of these channels, you won't get 5.1 surround, no matter what you do.

Since HDMI is a digital connection, it should work ok for getting 5.1 surround with your HD channels, gotten over the air, with an antenna. It won't help much in any other way.
Unless you live in a city with a lot of over the air HD channels, I'd be seeing what kind of deal I could get from the satellite people. They give HD receivers (with digital audio output) to new customers, that need them. If you threaten to go with cable, or another satellite company, they may give you a new HD receicer. But you'll need to subscribe to HD service. DirecTv now has about 90 HD channels available.
Also, at some point, you're going to need a new A/V receiver (surround receiver), that has more than one digital input, to hookup everything you probably want to hookup.
I'm sure some of this is stuff you didn't want to hear, but that's just the way it is. I hope it helped some?
Good luck!

I don't think he was really concerned as much with TRUE 5.1 as much as whether or not he could output the sound from his satellite boxes to his speakers. He will still get sound with an optical cable running from his tv to receiver, correct? Just as long as the left and right RCA cables are plugged into one of the inputs on the tv?
Update: I read through your post again and saw that you already answered that. DOOH!

I'm having trouble listening to regular tv through my receiver. I'm using an optical cable from the output of my tv to the input of my receiver but I get no sound. I also have an hdmi cable from my receiver to my tv for watching dvd, can I use that same output instead of using optical.
