Has anyone used their Wii as a media centre?
Have read about homebrew divx players and dvd players for open source modchips but would like to know what is out there for a wiikey modded unit.
Would actually like to play divx from an SD card if possible.

divx/dvd not really happening at this time - you can stream stuff with orb but that's not great for video either - music isn't too bad. One thing I do like is youtube using the browser though.

thanks juniR.
I have looked at orb, but as that is ISP and bandwidth dependant I have avoided using it.

If you are streaming locally then I don't think you use external bandwidth. I actually have orb on my phone and use my phone network provider for orb when out of the house but I always stream using my home network when in the house - the orb server simply points to your address but the traffic shouldn't go up & down but directly between media server and client (if you get me) - at least that's how I perceive it. I don't notice my internet connection struggling when I'm streaming and there's a fair bit going on - my son comes running to me screaming when his games lag and they don't. I'm not 100% sure because I have a good connection anyway which is pretty much unlimited but it will crash if there's too much happening and so far no probs.

I have been looking at the MFE Bootable Disc creator with the aim of loading half a dozen divx movies onto a dvd-r so I can watch them when travelling with my Wii.
What has occured to me with people posting questions on cleaning lasers and dead drive motors is this...
A gaming console must be designed so for the drive to start and stop in bursts to read parts of the game and then jump to another section and read again.
Therefore, it may cause more harm then good to have your drive playing contigous bits off a disc for hours on end.
Anyone done any research on this out there?

For those interested...
I have successfully used MFE Disc Creator v1.1 (download here) to create a boot disc.
Once running, using a game cube controller one may unmount the disc and put in a dvd containing dvd-video or dozens of divx files. The controller can then be used to remount the media.
Once mounted, the Wii successfully plays the DVD-Video and the Divx files.
So, it can be used as a Media Centre afterall... both with MFE and Orb (streaming).
Hopefully the next update in the software will allow users to access their SD cards and watch movies off that.

I know that this sounds stupid and I don't mean to be rude.
Why don't you just buy a cheap portable DVD player????
I wouldn't want to be using my Wii DVD drive (expensive) for non Wii stuff if I didn't have to.
I mean, good for you that you got this to work, but:

Well, its the only reason I did it. As stated, I am not a fan of using gaming consoles for playing dvds as I don't believe the drive is designed for it.
However, if at some point you can play media files from your SD card then I would use it as a media centre when travelling.

Nintendo DS and a flashcart. Not optimal, but it can be done. I carry it around with the latest movie trailers on it for my friends.
Get one of those fresnel lenses and poof . . . instant media player. Of course, then you could just get an MP4 player . . .
Cheers

i made a little tutorial on how to do that in that forum what you do is basicly just put the files you want into the media program then just click on your region and it makes a bootable dvd with the media you loaded it makes it into an iso file so all you do is copy it in pick your region then burn it.. i also added in how to put more then 1 gamecube game on a dvd which is nice since i have alot of them and now i can use half as many disks and put the orginals away to save space

Wonder if this X-OOM Media Center is a good way to go for those streaming to the Wii.
Might give this a go when I get time. Has potential to be better than Orb.

susieqbbb,
I mean, that's great and all, but isn't that another "I do it because I can" solution.
I am not a Mac expert but doesn't this assume that:
1. You have a Mac
2. You have you Mac with you (he travels with his Wii
3. You have them both up and running
Where the gain.
Not trying to be mean, just wanting to be educated.

There isn't a gain..
He was asking about a media center for the wii and because i do not travel with my wii i don't have any issues with having to have a computer with me.
And no you where not being rude i was just mentioning what i do all though this isn't recommended for every one it is easy to use and a great alternative for beginners that don't know much about address and video conversion.
