- I have about 3TBs of mpg2 movies on my Vista media server, and I would like to convert them all to WMV files. I have TMPGEnc 4 XPress, and I have experimented with it for awhile now, but I want your opinion on what the best settings are to use when converting the mpg2 files.
- The problem I'm having is that I do not have a high-def TV yet, so I'm left trying to figuring out the quality of my test files on either my 32" CRT TV or my 22" LCD, and i can tell by the quality on my LCD that the WMV files I'm producing currently aren't as good as the mpg2 files are. I'm creating the mpg2 files using VOB2MPG, so these files are still at their original DVD quality.
- I'm at work right now, so I can't say exactly what settings I'm using in TMPGEnc 4 XPress to produce my WMV test files, but I can say that I'm using the following:

Video - I try to keep everything original as I can
1) Resolution - same as original
2) Frame rate - same as original
3) Video codec - WMV 9
4) Video bit rate - 1000
5) 1 pass

Audio
1) Audio codec - WMA 10 5.1 surround sound
2) Audio bit rate ? 440
3) 1 pass
4) I'm boosting the audio to 200% because VOB2MPG lowers the sound for some reason

- I would hate to convert all of my movies, and then buy a HDTV and find out that the quality is bad, and have to start over again. Thanks in advance for the help, Jon

This is probably no help what so ever but personally i think WMV files are terrible not good quality & not very accsessible for other programs. AVI is where its at. But if you want to watch videos on a 360 through media center then it needs to ne WMV.

Besides not being able to play Divx files through the Media Center app on a 360, I don't think Divx supports 5.1 surround sound like WMV does, right???

Well unless i'm hearing things, i just heard Dolby Digital 5.1 center vocals, front left & right & surround left & right, through my amp on my PS3 watching an AVI Divx file i've just made. Sorry. I used virtualdubmod, i also made the picture 1080, wow i love my PC & PS3.

Are you saying that you know for sure that you are hearing 5.1, because you know Divx supports 5.1, or simply because you are hearing what sounds like 5.1? I hear 5.1 out of my system too, even though I only have my XBOX 360 hooked up to my amp with a set of RCA cables, which don't support 5.1; i.e. my receiver is up-converting (whatever it's called) the 2 channel sound to 5.1

Dude trust me, i'm a freak for 5.1 surround, i know it's 5.1, not fake 5.1, it's the original 5.1 track, too be honest i didn't know avi's could carry a 5.1 signal till recently but they can, i hope this helps.

Thanks, it does help with the avi 5.1 part of my question, but it doesn't help me with the WMV settings :)
