Explain the reasoning behind this Nintendo ingenuity.

WiiConnect24 ON and Standby ON and you can obtain News and Weather.

However, I figured in my lack of wisdom here that if I turn standby OFF I could access the News and Weather when my Wii was ON. This would also save power when the thing was OFF and not connected to the internet.

BUT NO- The gurus at Nintendo will only allow it to work with Both WiiConnect24 ON and Standby ON.... seems the second feature is superfluous.

Lets either have the feature ON or OFF. The standby feature is BS.

WiiConnect24 IS Standby mode. They are both the same thing.

WiiConnect24 is just so you can receive messages from online sources such as straight from Nintendo. You can leave it off and still enter the News/Weather channel.

Then why the redundancy?!?

Wii System Settings 2- Fourth Option Down -> WiiConnect24

Which then opens

WiiConnect24 - options ON or OFF
Standby - options ON or OFF
Slot Illumination - options BRIGHT, DIM, OFF

I have WiiConnect24 selected to ON, and Standby selected to OFF

In this configuration, I fail to get the News or Weather as it comes back with an error code and requests Standby to be ON.

I would have thought that if the Wii is infact ON and the WiiConnect24 is ON, then you should access the 2 channels.

As stated, I cannot get News or Weather, and would like to know others have managed this.
