I have been trying to backup (NOT pirate) a dual layer dvd and are
having some annoying problems. I have been using dvdshrink, dvd
decrypter and imgburn and still my backups refuse to play on my home
player (dv-606d). Yes, i know the player is a little old but its
capable of playing dual layers. My dvd burner is SH-S162L with latest
firmware(TS08). I checked to see if there was more recent firmware but
samsung doesn't appear to have updated it since early/mid '07. I am
using verbatim DVD+R DL/2.4 and from my previous attempts (about 4)
they seem to play on pc ok.

One thing that makes this even stranger is i actually have another DL
backup on the same media which was burned 3-4 yrs ago and it DOES play
on the dv-606d with no problems. I am guessing there might be a layer
break problem but when i check software like dvd decrypter, the
setting seems to be enabled. I have also tried using dvd decrypter to
rip and burn an image but still it wont work, although it did begin to
work ok but stopped shortly after. With so many options in these
programs i get a little confused. I am probably one option away from
the disc working 100% but haven't a clue which. Burn speed is always
2.4 and not able to burn faster (which i wouldnt anyway due to what
users say is best).

If i use 'file' mode in decrypter, it stops and tells me theres
protection. I find this odd because i thought it ripped protection
from the disc (theres an option for it). Ive also used dvd region+css
free and still this message appears. Dvd decrypter is shown in region
free's list of compatible programs.

Can anyone maybe suggest anything? this previously made disc thats
working is really adding the migraine i seem to be getting.

Although prices of media is falling, overall price/loss can mount up
with every beer-mat i seem to make :/

Thanks in advance

get the NEW version just out of anydvd a trial version for 2 weeks i think? not sure

anydvd aids ripping while running in the background while useing a ripping app

then rip to hard drive

dvd decypyter is very old and not updated, there are some serious protection now to break

may even need fixvts on parts of the dvd after...

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

It may be strange, but I had similar problem with Verbatim DVD+R/DL/2.4x. I got same brand 8x speed made in Singapore and no more problem. Burn at 4x, your 2.4x should be fine.
Decryptor is old and will not work on lots of new releases. AnyDVD is fine, you do not need any other software to rip, just open AnyDVD and choose "Rip to hard drive" and relax, it will copy.
Than use ImgBurn to do the rest. On +R, let it book type to DVD-ROM.
You can use Shrink to get rid of extras, but you will loose menu in reauthor mode.
There is DVDRemake, excellent, which let you remove what you do not want and keep DVD as it is, means menus and all other options.
It takes little time to learn, but worth it.

Well i am totally stumped. I inserted it into the player and it did
start. Got further then ever. Even reached the menu page. Then, i had
to remove disc because projector was showing odd colours and had to
reset it (wasnt dvd player because proj menu had odd colours too)

Then inserted disc again and *BaNg* i got the damn 'Cannot be played'
message again. What the hell is going on here. I tried the original
disc and played fine but a copy thats supposed to be practically a 1:1
copy works one min and the next it doesnt. I think the player needs to
go. I even have to change regions anyway with it. My dvd recorder
doesnt but wont play DL :(

Ive ran out of ideas and patience...and if i carry on ill run out of
DL's too :/
