Needing help and accurate advice.Saw an ebook online on how to fix/repair PS2s,but didn't cover what I was looking for.Asked friend if he knew of anyone with a broken PS2 they didn't want,so I could practice with the guide I found. He gave me 1 that his kids had broken, while fighting over whose turn it was.Dropped from head height, they appear to have damaged the DVD-Rom player. As the 'door' when PS2 turned on, only goes in a bit.
Can I replace it with a normal HDD,(I dont' believe I can) or get a new DVD-Rom unit and hook it up?
Can I take it out of the cover, put it in a PC,attach it to a HDD and play games from it? Or do I have to buy a special Unit?
Please email me at mostwtd@hotmail.com if you can help.

You can't play games without the DVD drive unless you have a mod chip. You can put games on the hard drive but you need a method of getting the PS2 to recognize the Hard drive. This is done by swap disk with HDLoader or a mod chip.

Frankly, it's cheaper and easier to buy a used unit instead of repairing it.

Thanks for the reply, but it still doesn't tell me why the door won't close and how to fix it...

Anyone know where I can get really detailed diagrams and/or schematics for the PS2. Does the 'wheel'in front of the laser disc in the PS2 have a black 'rubber/elastic band' attached that fits on the white plastic 'wheel'that sits on top of it,ie the protective cover with the 'caution' message ? As a walkman does...And where do I get info on the HD Loader?

This site might give you some insight about the tray.

Here is info on HDLoader

Note. you only need to buy it if you already have a modchip or swap disk (swap magic). You can download HDloader here if that is the case.

I found some sites that may help:

PS2 repair guide (lotsa pictures)

Tray alignment

Another repair guide

As always, be EXTREMELY careful when opening the PS2, lest you turn it into a doorstop.

Cheers!

mostwtd, I just noticed your email is in your post. All answers should appear here. Your email address is just spambot bait. I recommend you remove it.

Also, I would say that you can replace the DVD drive, but make sure it is the right model. There are a few different kinds.

The tray has probably skipped off a gear or the laser elevation arm has skipped out of the groove, or has broken.

Even if you get the DVD drive to work, there is a fairly good chance the laser will be out of alignment. be ready for that.

Keep us posted!

Cheers!
