Hi guys, i am new to PS3 and different video settings etc...Anyways i have a Toshiba HDTV which supports HDMI. So today i bought a PS3 and a HDMI cable and hooked everything up. However i can only get 1080i on my PS3 and not 1080p. Anyone know why this could be happening? Also is there a big difference in graphics between 1080i and 1080p resolutions? Is it really noticeable?
Thanks

Usually 32+ hdtv support 1080p. Under that it is 1080i/720p.

IMO there is not a big difference between 1080i and 1080p. It's one grade below. You can notice a difference in 480i and 1080p, but as for what is being asked there is really no difference. well...technically there is.

1080p is the best possible picture right now. With your tv even if it did support 1080p you couldn't tell the difference. I think your tv needs to be at least 42 inch for the human eye to be able to tell a difference between 1080i and p.

Just to clear up some points, the size of the tv does not affect if its 1080i or 1080p. Its the hardware. new models are pretty much all progressive scan (1080p), its not the size of the tv screen that affects that.
HD ready tv are usually 1080i, it was a term coined up a few years back when full HD tv were still to expensive to make for medium range tv, but at the same time HD was a buzz word. Now progressive scan tv are capable of FULL HD, eg the p in the back of 1080.
a 1080i can display material in the same high resolution of 1920x1080 as 1080P, so you get the same picture/resolution/size of image, but its differs in how the material is drawn.
HD ready tv that usually do 1080interlaced draw then every second row per sweep, while 1080progressive scan draws it in one sweep.
here is a slowed down picture of interlacing. TBH, when watching a picture of 1080i and 1080p next to each other, the difference is not that big, really.
