Recently my HD crashed and I lost all - including the DVDShrink freeware program I had used for years. When I was ready to reinstall I learned that the freeware is no longer available. I ordered the new DVDShrink2008. Being an 84-year-old computer illiterate I had more than my share of trouble getting the program up and running - or to be more truthful - I have the program up and crawling. But it is as slow as molasses in January. The old program would take about 30 minutes for the average movie. The new one takes about 1:1, or about two hours for a two hour movie. Would someone be so kind as to mail me the settings to improve the speed to the maximum consistent with quality reproduction? Make everything clear and simple. I would prefer you send this to: *removed by creaky*. Many thanks in advance.

First- you can download Shrink from here - free
If you got the "New 2008" shrink - there is no new one - it's a scam and you probably paid some fee - Shrink is no longer developed.
Try downloading this real free one and see if it works better.
The only settings that could control speed are in preferences - and you can check deep analysis. But mainly your computer CPU will determine how fast Shrink will decode.

I didn't think about that he might be using Shrink to rip the disc also - good advice about the drive settings. Guess I'm used to ripping w/ DVD Fab and only using Shrink to encode the file

First let me apologize for violating the forum protocol by adding my e-mail address to my post. To be honest I had not read the forum policy and this was my first time to use the forum - so I made a big mistake. Sorry about that.
Secondly, yes - it has developed that the new DVDShrink2008 is indeed a scam. There is a fee of $29.95 - for the same program (except for some improved cosmetics) as the freeware found here on this site - which I had been informed was no longer available. I have installed the freeware found here and find it works just as well as the scam program (I'm asking for a refund of my payment.) But the new freeware installation still runs as slowly as the others.
ZoSoIV suggested a change in drive mode - but being a computer illiterate I will have to get additional guidance on how to do that. Any help will be appreciated.
You are a fine group of helpful - and patient - patrons on this site. I am grateful to people like you who are willing to help the unknowing such as myself. Like Blanche Dubois, "I have always depended on the kindness of strangers." Thanks for your help.

Alkohol's guide for enabling DMA is about as easy as it's going to get. Just read it through it, it's not difficult.
Another thing you may want to try is opening your task manager while Shrink is running, click on applications tab, right click on dvd shrink, and set at a higher priority mode. See if that helps.

I don't know what caused the slow-down in ripping and burning DVDs, or more puzzling, why the problem evidently corrected itself. I burned a two-hour DVDvideo this morning which I had previously ripped. It took thirty-five minutes to complete the burn. Tried another burn this afternoon with approximately the same results. I can live very well and get along very nicely with results like that! My thanks to all who attempted to help solve my problem. I find a very cordial and helpful group of helpers on this site. I am grateful to all of you.
