I have a 400 MHz PC (I know - it's antique) with 256 mb of RAM and I'm trying to convert 41 minutes of special features from a DVD to an SVCD. I know that with the PC that I'm using, it's going to take at least 3 days for TMPGEnc to finish encoding it but do you guys have any help/info/suggestion on how I can speed up the process?
Please, no smart-ass answers like "Buy a faster PC" or "No." If you can't help, then don't bother posting a reply. If there is no solution then I guess I'm just going to have to leave this PC on for as long as it takes to finish encoding. Anyway, I just thought it wouldn't hurt to ask. Some of you guys are really knowledgeable regarding this.
If you mean, RIP a dvd to SVCD then TMPGEnc is fairly slow (which is to be expected given the hardware). If you could elaborate on exactly what you are doing I might be able ti give more of a perspective

To be brutally honest I dont think thats unreasonable and even perhaps optimisitc. If you want, you can raise the process priority to realtime, turn off all the background crap and that might save you and hour or two.
OK, I am following the guide for DVD to SVCD with TMPGEnc and I am stuck on the part where you are going to create the .mpeg from your .d2v and .wav output (from DVD2AVI) using TMPGEnc.
I know it's going to be a REALLY REALLY REALLY slow process and I was hoping there was someway to speed it up a little. Like closing all the background processes that are running, increasing the priority setting in TMPGEnc, etc.
OR, I think I should just shell out the 200 bucks and buy a DVD writer but I think I'm going to have to spend a LOT on the DVD discs. Sure, the quality would be great but the DVD to SVCD quality isn't so bad either. Besides, I'm used to watching telesynchs. :p

Well I can get you a Better deal than that..My wholesaler has Intel 2.5ghz CPU"s with Motherboards with 8X AGP"s for $115 and Athlon XP2200+ CPU"s(Thuroughbred) and Motherboard combos for $99 ,You can also get a Tripple Format DVD Burner right now for $99 so for that $200 you could Basicly Upgrade to a 2.5ghz or AthlonXP 2200+ and get the DVD Burner..The Motherboards that come with the 2.5ghz PC will allow you to upgrade to a 3.06ghz+ P-4 and the other Motherboard will allow you to upgrade up to any Athlon with a 333mhz FSB so up to 2800+ Cuz a 400mhz PC isn"t going to do much for you if you want to do any Video type stuff, you Probably can"t even Play a Video File in Full screen with your PC....In TMPGEnc if you go to the setting to "Motion Search Precition" and Moove it to "Motion Estimate search" then it will Speed up encodeing somewhat but the Quality might not be as Good...If you are interested in upgradeing your PC I can give you My guys Web address....cheers
