Japanese Wii wth US disc drive?

Hi. Long story short, I've fried my Wii's DVD drive. It is a Japanese Wii but the replacement drives I see are US drives.... Can I use these replacement drives then? Regions are enforced in the motherboard only, isnt it?

Yes you can use any replacment drive in any Wii system.

Ok this is really weird.
I got the new drive today and installed it to the Wii. I put a disc into it and it worked for like 10 seconds, and then there is this self-induced jump. The drive then stops spinning and will not power on again. Now I used the spare drive that I ordered along and it will also not power up. What's the problem this time? It checked the circuit and am able to measure a voltage across the fuses, the power pins and the ribbon cable pins, so its not the problem of the drive this time?
Please guys, I am out of ideas this time, and I'm desperate
