Hope I'm in the right place for this question.

Up until recently I have not been having any issues playing back any video formats. Until now that is.

I installed PowerDVD 7 recently but only just noticed that when I played a DVD using it that I only got sound (No picture).

I uninstalled PowerDVD & the Klite Codec pack. I the reinstalled the Klite codec pack followed by PowerDVD. Now PowerDVD will play DVD's fine but when I try to play AVI files using Windows Media Player 11 here's what happens. The majority of AVI will play fine in WMP11 but certain ones take like 2 minutes to start, when I double click on the problem AVI's WMP11 opens and I'm presented with a white screen followed by a black screen & after about one minute it starts to play, all the other AVI's open straight away.

Something else I just noticed but I don't know if it's significant? is that all the AVI files that are very slow to start playing have the DIVX logo on the bottom right of the screen when the movie starts & the ones that open straight away don't?

This never used to be the case & only started to happen recently.

Right now the full Klite codec pack is the only pack installed.

Has anyone got any idea as to what is causing my problem?

Thanks.

Hi Pryme H,

I had just installed DIVX 6 codec before I received your reply & it appears to have corrected the issue.

Strangely enough, it also caused PowerDVD to play sound only when a DVD disc was played.

I uninstalled PowerDVD & reinstalled it & now everything seems to be working fine?

The slow to open AVI's are opening straight away & playing fine.
PowerDVD is playing DVD's fine too (Both Picture & Sound).

Dragged one of the initial troublesome AVI's into GSpot as you requested & it too appears to be happy ;-) (See scrn shot below)

It looks like if you install codecs after PowerDVD is installed it does something to PowerDVD's codecs??? so it looks like it's down to the order in which they are installed. Does that make any sense to you?

By the way, that GSpot looks like a very handy little tool, thanks.

Thanks too for the prompt reply, it's much appreciated.

I'm no expert, but some possible causes are codecs clashes, absent codecs, broken codecs and filters or a blend of all.

Well, whatever is going on, I know for sure now that I have to install PowerDVD last. If I don't I will only get Audio when I play a DVD using PowerDVD. ????
