Is it worth buying encoding software?

I'm using Auto GK at the moment which is free.

Seeing as I've only used free encoding software would I get better results from a paid-for product.

If I can get better results by spending my cash then could somebody recomend a good VOB to Xvid encoder?

I think the answer is probably not.
