hey any one have any tips on how to keep downloads going all night long? i had it on one night and all my connections failed sometime during the night due to inactivity.
Many bots have a minimum speed set so the queue will rotate faster. If there's a problem on either side of the connection that causes the speed to drop below that magic number for a certain length of time, it will automatically terminate. That sounds like what has happened here. I would start by troubleshooting your connection; you can go to dslreports.com and get tons of pointers for that. As for what happens between your comp and the bot, that's nearly impossible to control. I would recommend obtaining some software that will monitor speeds for you overnight so you can find out if the disconnection and a speed sag correspond, and then try to discover which end caused the lag. If it's an outright disconnection, it's most likely the other end; some poor sap discovered that his computer was hijacked and shut it down (or some idiot network admin, lol).
thanks again. i wasn't sure if there was an inactivity timeout or something( i still think that there is) but maybe thats not whats causing these transfers to fail overnight.
if your connection was dropped by bot/server, your connection either went under the minuim send speed from that bot/server thus connection was killed by said bot/server. as Praetor said, the bot/server may have gone offline by either ping timeout, system bot/server was running on was shutdown.. lot of times bot/server gets lagged out by too many users connecting at once trying to download the same file or various files.. bot/server gets overloaded , connection cant handle to load bot/server goes byebye till connection is reset.
there's no real way to make a connection to an irc bot/server stay alive.. IRC servers are all over the world running on all different software / different connections using multiple protocols.. its one of the downsides of using IRC.. best bet is to try getting your file again off peak time on IRC when the channel and / or network isnt loaded down with traffic
