Don't ever mess with the optical drive (the UMD drive). EVER. I don't like messing with the optical drive. Try taking a 100% cotton clothe or shirt and LIGHTLY rub over the laser. Then blow into the drive a couple of times. Place any UMD into the drive. If it doesn't work, try a couple different UMD's. If not of them work, try flashing the firmware down and back to 3.80 M33-5. If it still doesn't work, then the only course it to buy a new PSP. No one who is unfamiliar with PSP hardware should replace the optical drive. A new optical drive kit costs ~$50, but to install it is ... difficult at best. May be best to buy a new one if you need that feature. The only thing I use my optical drive for is copying discs to my computer. Up to you though.
well i had no intention of actually taking it out or anything, i just read that sliding it over makes it work, ive slid it from the far right by the spindle to the far left to no avail, and if i have to buy a new one i might as well mess around with this one, i mean nothing to lose right? i just want to finish jeanne d'arc already though....

Lol, if your PSP is running custom Firmware, there really isn't a critical need for the optical drive. I, personally, play everything off my memory stick, but then again I spent $170 on an 8GB Sony card. You don't "need" to buy a new once since downloading PSP games is sooo easy to obtain. You could just copy the games to your memory stick and play it off of it. It's faster, uses less power, and makes less noise.
