I'm having some serious problems using DVD shrink as of late. Most of the time I get an error while it's writing the lead in and then it stops soon after. Sometimes it get past the lead in and then starts burning tracks, but eventually has an error and stops (best I've gotten lately is 88%).

Doesn't matter what I'm running besides it, it does the same thing. I even tried burning right after restarting, that got to the 88% before stopping.

Here's a copy and paste of one of the error messages I got:

1. free up some memory (laptops aren't great for backing up DVDs)

2. update nero to at least 7.8.5.0 or above

3. use better blank media cmc mag is one of the worst .use Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden burning at 4x to 8x max.

ALSO PLEASE EDIT OUT YOUR NERO KEYCODE OF YOUR POST!

Oh, didn't even know the key was in the error message, hope I got it, if I didn't let me know so I can pull it out. That's just how bad I am at reading error messages.

Guess I'll see if I can find some assistance in getting rid of yet more startup processes. I swear, it starts up with 80% memory used, and that's before I even start all the stuff I normally run. But I have no choice besides a laptop, it's my only computer.

I'll go update Nero, but won't touch better blank DVDs until this problem is completely solved. I don't exactly have money to burn on even bad DVDs burning constant coasters.

You might want to try using Imgburn to write to disc. (It's Free)
If I Were You I would Cut My Losses on the Discs. If You Can't afford TYs or Verbs Try RITEK Brand Discs.

Also you may want to set your target area to 4300 mbs.
Don't burn any faster Than 1/2 the rated speed of your Discs.
Don't Multi-task while Backing up a DVD.
Check out the guides for Burning with Imgburn.

For the Discs:

Well, updating Nero and clearing out as many processes from startup as I honestly could still didn't fix it, have yet another coaster to add to the collection.

And I can afford discs just fine, but even burning a constant string of coasters on cheap discs is not something I can afford. I may as well take a pile of cash and set it on fire for as much good as this is doing me. That is why I won't spend more until this problem is solved, I never had problems in the past burning DVDs, I just am now that I was forced to switch brands because the store I bought DVDs at stopped carrying the one I used to use.

While yes, this problem did crop up when I switched brands, I'm seriously doubting it's related to that. The brand I used before was honestly even cheaper than the one I'm using now, since it was a generic brand.

What I fail to see is how media could be related to this issue. I seem to be burning coasters because an error crops up during the burning process. I did burn 1 successful DVD with the current brand I'm using, so I'm seriously doubting brand is the issue, and no one has yet to convince me otherwise.

And ImgBurn didn't help, I get this error when burning or verifying:

W 17:53:01 Failed to Read Sector 0 - Logical Block Address out of Range

And that repeats on forever until I cancel pretty much.

I did trade with my roommate for one of his blanks. He uses Dynex DVD-Rs, I had been using Maxell DVD+Rs. The one I got off my roommate did burn fine, and if anything it's an even cheaper brand than what I was using, so I doubt media quality is the issue here. My old brand was a cheap generic also.

So it's either the fact that I am using DVD+Rs, or maybe I need to find some cheap generics, since those seem to be all that work.

It doesn't matter how cheap/expensive the "generic" media is. A lot of them are branded. MIJ Fuji, if you can find them, are Taiyo Yudens. Some Memorex discs are NOT CMC mags.

The poor dye, and its production process, are the compelling issues for the horrible reputations these poor media receive. Does that mean that these tainted discs are incapable of burning successfully? Of course not. But majority shows, they're trashy media.

As great as imgburn is, if it's trashy media, it can't overcome it.

You are failing to realize that cheap, generic brands might be great brands underneath. Sony MIJs are TYs. Fuji MIJs are TYs. Sony DLs that are MIT are actually Verbatims. Obviously, Sony and Fuji may not be considered "cheap, generic brands," but I'm just illustrating the point that the actual brand may be different than the label.

EDIT: For what it's worth, I have 7 full binders of backups. In my second binder, I started the first handful of pages are TDKs that are coded out as CMC Mags. For those to play successfully, I need to say a prayer and take my vitamins. It really is hit or miss. Since those handful of discs, I have never had an issue with playback. Why? All TYs or Verbatims.

believe us ladynadia the brand of media plays a very important part of the burning process.(Mr. Pink was right on!) you need to find a good match with the blank media you use and your burner and using Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim usually ends up 99.9% of the time being the best match.maybe your drive likes the DVD dash R format better than the DVD plus R. also the inexpensive blank media cost the same as the good stuff case in point last time i bought Taiyo Yudens online(beat media in the world) they ended up being 21 cents each and that was shipped with no tax so give that some thought. one more thing that may help make sure you have the most up to date firmware for your drive/burner check here
