DVDr wont burn burn but DVDrw will??

I have dvdxcopy platinum and when I try to copy a movie in express mode to DVD-r or +r it reads the movie but when it begins to write I get an error writing disc. When I use a DVD+rw disc it works just fine. I'm a lil new at this and have many movies I'd like to burn. I'd like to burn them to DVDr's though since their much cheaper. I'd be thankful for any help. I use a Plextor-708 for my burning which is compatible with both.
